Has this ever happened to anyone? Daycare related

I just noticed that our bottles have slits in the nipples.  I'm assuming this is so they can pour the milk down LO's throat as quickly as possible.  Obviously I'll be talking to them Monday to see if they had a good reason or why they didn't tell us.  LO is breastfed except at daycare she's given pumped bottles so there isn't a reason to go up in nipple size either.  This explains why they always mention how much she spits up.  Any words of advice for having this conversation with the daycare next week?  TIA

  • Are you sure they slit them?  The same exact thing happened to me, but I realized the nipples were cracking from going in the dishwasher.  I replaced them, and checked them daily, and after a few months, sure enough they cracked again.  I know they cracked because when I would squeeze the nipple, it would crack in front of my eyes.

If you are sure they are sliting them....I dunno.  I would FURIOUS.  Like in a rage.

  • I have a bf baby too.  He's 7 mo old and we are still using the newborn nipples.  I too would be furious if I found out daycare was slitting the nipples.  However, I would go in calmly and ask them calmly first.  Then if they said they did it, I would have a heated discussion about why breastfed babies stay on the slowest flow until weaned and how if I wanted him on faster flow nipples, I would send faster flow nipples.  I would also insist that the daycare take off the price of all new nipples on my next tution payment.  We've had our nipples for 7 months now too and they have never cracked in the dishwasher, but different kinds probably do different things.  That's a definite possibility too.

What brand are you using?  I use Dr. Brown's and have a hard time seeing the dishwasher doing this in under 2 months when I have enough bottles for them to only be washed once a week.

  • I have Avent and only enough for 3 days.  On close inspection, I could tell on mine that the "slit" wasn't made with scissors or a knife, they were cracks.

Do yours look like a clean cut?

Seriously I don't know what I would do if I were you.  My first thought is to tell the teacher that you know they were cut, that they have all been replaced, and you will be inspecting them daily from here on out.

  • I don't think they would do this but I don't know.  I know mine might recommend gettng a different flow if they noticed DD was having a difficult time.  I know when we switched bottles they noticed that DD was not taking as long to drink her bottles.  Just ask them.
  • Coming out of lurking. I might go in and say, "I noticed the bottle nipples on all my bottles were cracked so I replaced all of them, you may notice it might take the baby a little longer to eat. Let me know if you notice any cracked nipples, I will continent check them as well." See what they say. I would be furious but you don't want to go in all guns blazing!

  • I wouldn't be happy if someone did this without consulting me, but maybe You could say, "I noticed you slitted the nipples, do you think she needs a faster flow?  Because maybe she does.

I breastfed exclusively except for pumped for daycare for the first 6 mons, we since are supplementing with formula. My daycare asked for us to increase the nipple size around 3 months.  LO was getting frustrated because of the speed.  They only have my baby so I know it isn't because they have so many to feed that they wanted to move her quicker.  LO can breastfeed faster than the slowest nipple, so there is reason to increase the flow, even if you breastfeed the rest of the time.  Maybe you should consider giving them faster flow nipples.

Also, do you think they could be adding cereal to her milk?  My daycare wanted to add in cereal and purees into the bottle to make a "slurpie" and said they would make the hole bigger if they did this.  I didn't let them- had doc write a note for spoon fed only.

  • I would just tell them you noticed that the nipples had slits and ask if they had done it. If they say no, let them you know replaced the nipples and would keep a closer eye on them to make sure they aren't wearing out.

I too have a hard time believing that the dishwasher did that in just two months but you won't want to run in screaming. Give them a chance to explain. You're going to be seeing these people every day and you don't want to completely ruin the relationship. If they did it  then tell them it should never be done again, then call the director and ask her to take the cost of replacements off of your next tuition payment.

  • Dr. Brown's makes a nipple that has slits in it, it is the "Y" nipple.  I would first check to see if you have LO's nipples.  You can check on the flat part of the nipple where it meets the bottle.  There would be a "1," "2," "3," or a "Y."  If it isn't your LO's nipples, then I would ask them who they switched the nipples with.  But because I have a small bit of OCD I would also buy LO new nipples.
  • This makes me a little nervous about the patience of your dc provider. I say this because I get impatient with how long it takes for Jack to finish the bottle. I might say something to the director and keep an eye in new nipples. If, as a pp suggested, they were adding cereal or anything else I would probably blow a gasket.

    Well said.

  • Before you accuse them of anything, is it possible your bottles/nipples got mixed up with another childs?

That's what I was wondering. Several babies in our daycare use Medela bottles, and although our bottles are labeled, the nipples aren't. They rinse out the bottles in the sink at DC, and twice we've been sent home with another baby's bottle nipples by mistake.
