So I called me pedi on Wednesday and he had me come right in (Harlie had had a fever over 100 for 3 days) He checked her all out and nothing obvious could be identified. So he sent us to the hospital for further tests, he said it was just standard when a fever was without identifyable reason. I wasn't too worried at this point. I called DH to meet us at the hospital. We got in and they striped her down and took her vitals, her temp was up to 103. They drew blood and had to give her a catheter to take urine (That was awful! I had to step out and Let DH be there.) I went with her to her x-ray which was so hard they put her in a little tube to keep her still with her hands up in the air all i could hold onto were her little fingertips which wasn't much of a comfort to either of us.
After everything came back, her blood and urine showed high levels of white blood cells, and we were admitted into peds. All the nurses were so nice and wonderful, I can't say enough about them! But the worst part was when they tried to give her an IV. because she hadn't been eating as well. They tried 5 FIVE times. 3 in her hands and one in her foot and one in her head! her tiny beautiful little head! They finally gave up after her screaming and me crying they just weren't gonna get it. So instead they gave her a shot which stung and burned and she cried more and more. They kept giving her tylenol and we stayed wednesday night.
Thursday morning she had an ultrasound to make sure it wasn't her kidneys. They found an infection in her pee (Basically we took to be a bladder/UTI type infection) Ultrasound came back clean and good. But her fever was still high. We had to be fever free for 24 hours before we could go home. Friday morning they came and took more blood and we went for a dye output test. Where they filled her bladder with fluid that has a dye in it and you can see it on a x-ray machine to see if there was fluid going back up into the kidneys or uethras or anything. That little girl can hold a lot in her bladder! This involved yet another catheter!
I stayed with her through everything and didn't leave the hospital. It is the worst feeling in the world to see your baby go through all that and theres nothing you can do but hold their little hand and kiss them and tell them its gonna be ok. I would have done anything to have it be me and not her.
I'm glad to say that her fever finally started going down Thursday night and stayed down, and we were sent home Saturday morning. She is still doing good and on antibiotic for a week. She is a healthy little girl back to eating and smiling and laughing and even learned to do raspberries while we were at the hospital! So hope no one has to ever go through that though!

Oh, how scary. I'm glad she's on the mend!
DS has had a VCUG too. (catheterized, dye, forcing fluid into the bladder from the outside) I made DH go into the room with DS, I stayed in the room across the hall trying to pretend I couldn't hear the screaming. The good news is our little ones won't remember the procedures, just us.
My heart sank reading about the x-ray with the cage/tube thing and the IV. Just remembering my own LO going through that brought tears to my eyes, the IV was the single most heartbreaking experience of my life, he was screaming so hard his heart rate was 220 and I could do nothing (he was only 10 days old at the time). I can sympathize with you so much on that, as a parent you just wanna take all the pain away, I was beyond desperate to help him but you can't do anything in that situation. He had bruises in his hands and feet for weeks, they tried to give him an IV 7 different times before finally getting it.
Thank goodness your LO is on the mend, how scary for all of you to have to go through!
Oh my goodness! Poor baby, and poor mama!
DD has had a VCUG as well, and it was so hard to hear her screams.

So what was the result of the VCUG? My DD had one at 2 months old due to an unexplained fever which was a result of a UTI/kidney infection. She has reflux in both kidneys. DS had one at 2 days old to rule out reflux thanks to hydronephrosis in his left kidney (wanted to make sure it wasn't reflux since DD has it).
I'm glad LO is feeling better. I know how hard it is to deal with seeing our LOs going through a medical procedure and feeling helpless. If you ever want to chat you can find me on here or FB.
