Cheaper Progesterone Injections than Makena...

I posted this question on the high risk board too.....

My OB wants me to take Makena injections since I went into preterm labor at 29 weeks with my DS.  The pharmacy called today and they said my insurance is only covering 50% and my copay is over $1000. They said there might be some financial assistance to cover the cost but I doubt we will get any.  I've read on the boards here that there is a similar injection called 17p.  Is the 17p injection much cheaper.  If so, how did you get it?  My OB's office is closed on Fridays so I couldn't call today to let them know and ask about anything else.  If I can spend less I would love that since I'm a SAHM but if I can't get anything different I will pay the copay I just think it's a little outrageous.

Re: Cheaper Progesterone Injections than Makena...

  • It's the same thing, just a generic.  It's what's been around for forever until Makena came out this year.  Your OB should be able to just write you a prescription for it.  I had to pay for mine 100% out of pocket, and it only cost $180 for all 20 injections.  Any compound pharmacy can make it.  I had to order mine from a place out of town, and they just shipped it to my OB's office.  There's no reason you should have to get Makena, all it is is a name brand.  It is outrageous, and I would refuse to pay for it.
