BF'ers is this normal?

OK so I'm back with more ?'s (don't worry girls I have a meeting with a LC tomorrow shes going to observe a feeding;)

So as I explained in my PP, my daughter is 3 weeks old and spent the first 2 weeks in the hospital eating from a bottle ( milk that I pumped) and the last week we have been working on getting her back to breast. Iv been offering the breast as much as possible and supplementing with the milk I pump. Well today we have been EBF...

Is it normal for me to want to go crazy!? My nipples are so sensitive it hurts. I think her latch is correct because her mouth is wide I hear the swallowing the ears wiggling  and I see the milk on her lips & running down her face when shes done but IT HURTS. Also she has was eating about every 3 or 4 hours during the day but now for about the last 3 hours shes been wanting to eat 30 minutes after she finishes!! I guess I just need some reassurance :( I just want this so badly & I need to know Im not nuts!

thanks for all the support today ladies!

Re: BF'ers is this normal?

  • maybe ask the LC about a nipple shield... my nipples got cracked and hurt sooo bad but now I use a shield and they have healed and they only hurt during feedings when hes not latched right...

  • Are you using Lanolin or something after each feeding?  My DD1 was a cluster feeder, which is like your are seeing with the every 30 minutes.  She nursed that way till 4 months, and never really stated on a schedule.

  • I'm a STM who nursed for 9 mo the first time and BF'ing still hurts at this point. It really only hurts at initial latch for about 10 seconds. When she's actually eating its ok.  I used a nipple shield with DS. If I get really sore I'll use one a couple times a day with DD. it does take her longer to eat with it though. I also swear by earth angel baby mama nipple butter.

  • I was gonna say growth spurt too.

As far as the latch, as others have said, it should only hurt the first 10-15 seconds, not the whole time.

Normal, but it could be a latch issue. Your LC will definitely be able to help with that.  You could be hitting a growth spurt, which may explain the frequent feedings.  I still need to wake DD to eat, but DS cluster fed every night for like 3 months.  Hang in there!  It does get easier :-)

I agree with your growth spurt theory on the frequent feelings. LO hit one two weekend ago at around 2 1/2 weeks and is hitting another one now around 4 weeks. LC said it is normal for about 1-2 days every couple of weeks in the first three months for the babies to hit a growth spurt and seemingly eat about every hour on the hour. They tend to be fussy more on those days too, so just hang in there!  As for the nipple soreness, I'm like the PP who said that they are a little tender at the initial latch, but then fine after a few seconds. Lanolin is great, also take breast milk after LO unlatches and rub around the nipple area and let it air dry before bringing out the next breast. Good luck!

  • make sure her lower lip doesn't tuck in. her lips should fish out. if they tuck in, she'll be able to drink, but it will cause pain.

  • Totally normal with the pain. That is a lot of hard core sucking on your nipples all of a sudden. No matter if her latch is correct or not, you will have some pain and discomfort. I would always get a searing pain initially and then after we were done my nipples would feel raw and in pain. Towards the end of the "pain" stage, I would get this burning/needle feeling through my nipples/areola's after baby broke their latch. Honestly, there has always been some sort of/level of pain for the first 4-6 weeks, even if it's been super mild at the end. Unless you have an issue like flat or inverted nipples, steer clear of the nipple shields. It's just something that you will have to wean off later and deal with the nipple pain all over again.

As far as the feeding frequencies... bottle feeding is much easier than breastfeeding. She was probably getting in more food faster with the bottle than she is with nursing, which would explain why she wants to eat so soon again. She will get more efficient and faster and will start going longer between feedings. Just give her some time. Also, some babies just like to cluster feed, plain and simple. Nothing wrong with it at all though.

Great job, mama, for sticking with it! You're doing a great job!!

  • I was sore for the first two weeks, not unbearable, but sensative.  And yes the "cluster" eating is normal.  My DD did it for months, and DS has started doing it.  You should notice it happen around the same time every night.  I noticed it with both form 5-8, right before they want to sleep for the night.

  • You are so, so lucky that she latched after two weeks of bottles. My DS had TWO bottles and hasn't latched since. We've done everything possible, he just really loves the bottles. I'd ask your LC about a shield and make sure you use Lanolin after every single time...it helps if you cover your nipple with a breast pad too to kind of saturate it in the cream.

    Yes

We went through that with DD1.  I regretted EVER using that stupid shield since the only reason I was using it was because of nipple pain.  It became such a messy pain in the butt that I wished I had just toughed it out with the pain.
