Conjunctivitis- 9 week old

Yesterday I noticed that LO's eye was weeping and crusted over.  I assumed it was allergies because we had been outside for a bit and she's been sneezing a lot.  This morning the eye was completely shut and crusted.  I called the doctor described the symptoms to a check-in person and asked if we should be seen.  She put me on hold to check with a nurse and confirmed it was conjunctivitis and they would call in a prescription.  I never got to speak with a nurse or doctor to ask how common it was for a 9 week old to get this and how she could have picked this up.  Anyone else run into this at such a young age?

  • Bummer!  She could have gotten it anywhere, really...shopping cart, anywhere or any person if you guys have been in public.

Just wanted to share a tip w/you too.  Are you breastfeeding?  Breastmilk is really good at speeding healing as well because of its antibiotic properties.  You can just express some in LO's eye to help her get over it faster.

    Good luck!

  • I didn't realize how contagious it was, you're right she could have picked it up anywhere.  I am BF but didn't know it could speed the recovery.  Thanks for the tip.

  • Ellie got this when she was three weeks old. She was on antibiotics for a few days. They think she got it from getting vomit in her eye after an unfortunate spit up ricochet off my shoulder.

  • my 3 month old just got it, too! she's just on eye drops for 5 days and I can tell it's already clearing up on day 3.  My Doc was afraid it might be MRSA but I just got the call from him today telling me that it wasn't.  Thank goodness! I guess it's pretty common but it's still hard to see your baby going through it :( Good luck!
