Hot Spot on my dog

My nine year old Golden Retriever has hot spots all over his body. Again. He seems to get them during the same months every year. He is going to be on antibiotics for 2 weeks. He has been on them for three days and seems to be doing a lot better. I am wondering if there is a way to avoid or reduce his chances of getting hot spots again? My other Golden has never gotten hot spots. Does anyone know if breed makes a difference or  is it just luck?

Re: Hot Spot on my dog

  • I bet it's environmental allergies M.  Have you asked your vet about something to help him?  Prednisone would be pretty serious, but for a couple of months it might be ok.  Ask over on the pets board on the nest.  They aren't scary and will have more ideas.

  • I have a black lab/golden retriever who is prone to hot spots.  I'd shave the area around the hot spots to get air.  Dog probably needs a prescription if they are open/oozy and their are multiple.  My best guess would be food related.  Easiest test would be to switch to a simple protein/grain food, (sweet potato, turkey, is what we're using right now.)  I've heard chicken can often be allergy provoking in dogs.  Poor guy.  If you're able to take him to the vet they will shave the areas around the hot spots, get him on a prescription probably cephalaxin, and then you can discuss things such as food allergies, fleas can also contribute to hot spots.

  • My parents have a lhasa apso that gets them pretty bad. It's from allergies. They were given a special shampoo (rx I think) that seems to keep it pretty minimal.

  • My parents golden gets them frequently.  I think they're akin to yeast infections, right?  they usually get a prescription to help dry the spots out. She had a horrible one on her face a few years ago, that we thought was going to be really serious but it ended up clearing up.
