Daycare quandries

Hello!  I am so nervous about daycare and am becoming very overwhelmed by the searches.  How and where do you even start looking?  It seems like there are not any openings for newborns in my area.  Any ideas on how to start the process are greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Re: Daycare quandries

  • When we started, we decided if we wanted a center or an in-home. That would eliminate a lot of options. Then we checked out this site: https://www.mnchildcare.org/ It gave a lot of great options for child care. We also googled our city and daycare and found some more places. We were looking for centers but had no idea of their prices, so we went on their websites/called and asked for a quote to see how much it would cost per week. That also helped elminate places that were out of our budget. The ones that were close and within our price range, we called and set up appointments to tour and learn more about it. After visiting the first place, we ended up enrolling our daughter there. We loved it and we have not regretted our decision once.

  • Do you have an 'employee assistance program' (EAP) through your employer?  Some of the EAPs offer assistance resources in finding child care options.  I used to work for Ceridian, which is an administrator of EAPs, and I remember lots of people using this benefit.

  • The key is to remember that you are in control.  If you start some place and aren't happy, remember you can always leave and look for a new place.  My daughter is 2 1/2 and she is on her 3rd DCP.  The first two did not work out for us and we kept looking until we found something.  It is a little tough to deal with the transition, but in the end finding the happiness you are looking for is the reward in the end.

  • Do you want in-home or center?  Centers almost always have openings and probably won't even begin the registration process until after baby arrives.  I remember being stressed about it but we could have practically walked in the day we needed to start daycare (if not for the insane amount of paperwork).

Can't speak too much about in-home because we've been in a center since DD1 was 5 months old.  We're very happy with it.  We recently switched centers (same company) to be closer to home and we really don't have big complaints about either.

I honestly don't even remember when we started--sometime after I was 30 weeks pg.  We knew we wanted a center and looked at several around our target area.  We found them either through online searches or driving by.  We picked the one that we felt most comfortable with.

Don't get yourself too worked up!  You have plenty of time.
