Hates the car!

Anyone else have a LO who hates the car? She is fine if someone is in back with her but she screams every time I go anywhere alone with her. Whether it is a mile away or 20 she screams! Any ideas to keep her happy and me sane (other than never leaving the house)?

Re: Hates the car!

  • does she have a mirror so she can look at herself or see you in it when you stop at redlights.  Maybe then she won't feel like she is alone.

  • I take the little vibrating thing from her bouncy seat and put it in her car seat, she loves it!!!

  • I've started swaddling DD in the carseat and it helps.  I think she feels out of control in the seat, but she isn't crazy about the swing either.  I either use a Swaddle Me, or a just tuck a thin blanket tightly around her so her arms are secure.

  • I second the mirror suggestion! Xander wasn't crazy about the car the first couple times, but once he could focus a little better I catch him staring into the mirror all the time and we havn't had any problem in the car after we put the mirror in. Hope you find something that works for your LO
  • My DD hates the car as well. Mirrors do nothing for her. She is good with the paci until it falls out of her mouth. I usually just let her scream until we get to our destination. It sucks, but it's the only way I am able to actually get places. She is totally fine as soon as I take her out of the car.

Sorry I don't have good any advice. I've tried it all (I think). Sad

I might be way off base, but I don't recommend the swaddle in a car seat. I think that it would interfere with what the car seat is supposed to do, and would make it not as safe. I was told never to put anything between the straps and your baby, and some people go as far as to recommend you not even wear a coat on your child in a car seat because it can be unsafe. I'm not sure on the specifics, but it just doesn't seem like a good idea to me.

The "Swaddle Me" swaddle is designed to go over  the straps, so the straps are still right up against the baby.  It's actually pretty ingenious.

  • Our LO hated the car too until we rolled the window down about 2-3 inches. The white noise from it soothes him immediately and everyone is happy!!
