Vaccine advice please

How big of deal is it if you put one set off. We are due for her one year shots. Lost medical last month. Dh is up for a promotion from temp to regular but the paper work is in process. Could be another month before we have insurance. So do I pay out of pocket to have them done at the county health clinic or just wait a month and hope the insurance kicks in?? Wwyd??

Re: Vaccine advice please

  • I don't think a month is a big deal.  We delayed my son's 12 month shots for six weeks with the pediatrician's blessing due to insurance reasons.

  • We started the shots about 6 wks late due to a paper wk mix up. This would make us 10 or so weeks off. I wonder if it matters?

  • I wouldn't worry about it. Tons of people vax on an alternate schedule which puts them off  from the traditional schedule.

  • Not a big deal at all to shift back at all. Insurance is a very legitimate reason. Talk it over with your pedi if you're concerned, but waiting a few weeks (even months) is no prob.
  • It's no big deal unless a kid is in a daycare that requires it.  For instance we delayed the MMR due to a serious medical reaction by my brother ( even though it was some 30+ years ago, he was hospitalized and almost died so our pedi still thought it was reasonable to delay until the boys were older).

The only thing that I would check with your pedi, or you could probably even figure it out online, is that some shots that are done in a series need to be done within certain times of each other.  I have no idea at all what comes at 1 year anymore and if there is anything that falls into that type of category.

  • Another option as well is to explore Healthy Families, it's got a pretty high upper income limit (we qualify and while I would say he's underpaid my husband works in a technical field and has been with the same company about 6 years doing a highly professional job).  The insurance overall is fabulous and is rediculously cheap.  Every time they talk about cutting it I think, hell I'd pay 3-4 times what we pay to keep the system going.  We only pay some 30 odd dollars for two kids, it's typically 40 something but if you auto pay every month you get $10 off each month.  We've got normal $10 co-pays and it covers medical, dental and vision.

With his company plan we were paying about $300 in monthly premiums and that was on a play with $40 co-pays, a $4,500 yearly out of pocket maximum and was only for medical.

Not that you asked for all that info but I know that prior to having kids I knew nothing of the program and it was only when DH's peer at work told him that his kids were on it.  I was shocked that we would qualify for anything at our income level.

  • 1 month I would say isn't critical, but you could go to a clinic where they have a VFC program (vaccines for children), like my clinic.  It is a program for any uninsured kid to get vaccines, state funded.  Let me know if you have more questions.
  • I don't think it's a big deal, unless you are traveling. There is a lot of measles in Europe and all the developing countries. I put some off for a bit, didn't feel like getting them all bunched up.

we've had the MMR delyed a few times now because they won't administer it when the child has a fever and Baz was sick twice and then cutting molars. He'll get it next week.

One month is not a big deal.

  • Thanks so much ladies for the advise. I am at the clinic waiting for the nurse to go over the shot record. Looks like we are going to get a blessing to let it ride until the insurence thing gets worked out. I will let you know how it goes.
