GD carb question...

So what happens if you don't eat enough carbs and you have GD?  Anything bad to the baby?  Last week when I first started the diet I didn't get enough carbs and the nurse told me to up them because I was feeling really tired/cranky but nothing about harming the baby.....any insight on this?

Re: GD carb question...

  • When you don't eat enough carbs the body burns the wrong thing for energy, I believe its muscle. I do not know the harm to the baby, but generally speaking you need carbs for your own brain function and the energy used during the day.

  • Like lmjt said, not eating enough carbs means your body looks for alternate sources to burn for energy. Usually fat first, but also muscle. Burning fat/muscle can cause your body to produce ketones, which are basically an acid that ends up in your bloodstream. They can have an effect on the baby, but from what I understand they need to be very high and sustained for a significant amount of time to cause damage. Some GD moms test for ketones in their urine every morning to make sure they are getting enough carbs. I was spilling large amounts of ketones, so I eat a very high carb bedtime snack.

Without your carbs you are basically on the Atkins Diet and that isn't enough for you to sustain yourself. I was eating too few carbs at first because I was afraid of high numbers. I was okay for a few days but then was starving.
