Food Allergy

Corn allergy and dumb ?

My daughter has a dairy intolerance.  We've been making our way through solid foods now and  tried some Kix cerea last night. It is dairy and soy free, but is mostly corn.  She had a bad reaction today with gas, reflux, diaper rash, runny nose, red cheeks and refusing to eat for my MIL.  I konw this is dumb question, and I'm afraid I know the answer, but does this also mean that I need to give up corn since we're still breast feeding?  I know that the dairy proteins can be transferred from mother to child but have not found anything regarding corn.  Thanks for any thoughts!

  • The corn protein is pretty low, so I'm not sure it would be transferred through your milk.  But I would def ask her pedi.  Also, if this is the first time shes reacted, I'd want to do a more controlled trial.  Its not like you fed her corn and she reacted, it could be anything in the cereal.

  • I'd ask the pedi, too. Will has a corn allergy and used to be very sensitive to even small amounts of it, but we didn't discover that allergy till after we were done BFing so I'm not sure.

  • I would guess that if she hasn't ever reacted to corn in your diet before that you're still ok to eat it.  I know a few people with corn allergy kiddos- has she had any other products with corn ingredients (corn starch is in a ton of things)?  maybe it's the large amount of corn that triggered her.  Can you call an allergist?

  • i would avoid direct corn intake -but not via your milk since she didn't react to your milk.  Some allergies don't transfer through BM, or it may be that she's got a milk allergy to corn so your BM breaks it down enough for her to not to react.

  • This is the first time she's really eaten any manufactured food so I don't think she's been exposed. I think it may be time to see an allergist.
