Mirena vs Paraguard

I had my heart set on Mirena, I had it btwn DS and DD and I LOVED IT. Unfort, we have new insurance (BCBS) and it does not cover Mirena. BOOOO! I really don't think I could be accountable for a daily bc pill, nor refilling it timely, so I reeeeally want either Mirena or Paraguard.

I am familiar w/Mirena, but no clue about Paraguard. Can anyone tell me the major diffs - pros/cons???

Sorry, I don't know the differences btwn the two.  Are you sure BCBS covers Paraguard? I ask b/c I was supposed to have Mirena and learned my insurance (Aetna) does not cover it.  Then I got my heart set on Paraguard only to learn it's not covered either.

mirena has hormones, paraguard doesn't. and i have a great bcbs policy and am still paying $363 for paraguard.
  • I looked into both and the main difference is that Paraguard is hormone free - it's inserted just like Mirena but carries no hormones whatsoever.  You can leave it in for up to 10 years.

Unfortunately my insurance does not cover either one.  Like pp said, are you sure paraguard is covered?  I would imagine they'd either cover both or neither.  But I could be wrong!  Insurances do some wacky things, that's for sure.

  • I guess I don't know the pros/cons of having hormones versus not. I don't know any diff, considering I had it for 3 straight years...  Will it make me nicer to my husband? ;) hehe
  • Have you considered Implanon?  It is placed in your arm.  I have it and it is safe for breastfeeding.  It is good for three years.  BCBS does cover it, at least they paid for mine.

  • I have Paragard and so far, so good. I can't take hormones (I have blood clotting issues) so Mirena wasn't an option. I've heard that heavier, longer, more painful periods can be a side effect of Paragard (at least for the first few months) but I BF and haven't gotten my period since it was inserted. (In contrast, periods are typically lighter or stop completely with Mirena.)
