Weaning from 2 naps to 1?

Do you take charge here, or let LO lead. For example, DD went down at 11:30...do I wake her after an hour so that she'll go down later for another one hour nap, or do I let her sleep as long as she needs? How do I make this transition?

*she usually naps for one hour around 11am and 4pm, bedtime at 7:30pm

  • Both myself and my DCP are following DS's cues. Some days he doesn't take a morning nap, but will nap great from 1-3 in the afternoon. Other days he'll take a 1 hour nap in the AM and again in the afternoon. My kid just loves to sleep Smile

  • For DS it depends on the day, but I follow his cues. Most days he'll only take 1 nap so I try and push it as far as I can so that it's a little later (after lunch) and so that he'll sleep a little longer. If he gets up early and naps early then it's usually a shorter nap and he'll take another in the late afternoon. More often than not lately though he's fighting the afternoon nap so I try and get him to eat lunch first. I'm a "get out of the house and get it done early" type if I have errands so that works out good. Most of the time he'll stay awake while we're out, come home, eat lunch and nap really well.

  • I really don't believe in waking kids up. If he's sleeping than he's obviously tired so I let him sleep. He's been between 1 and 2 naps for the last month. I follow his cues. Eventually he will stay with one but I'm not gonna rush it.

  • I definitely follow LO's cues and would never wake her.  When DD was around your daughter's age, we thought she was going to one nap and tried it for about a week and it just messed her all up and we went back to two naps.  She still takes 2 most days.  Today, for example, she woke at 8am instead of 7am, so I knew she wouldn't go down around 10:30 when she normally does.  I pushed her nap back until 12:00 and she's been asleep for 2 hours now.  She probably won't take a second nap.

The biggest problem I have is that she will ALWAYS go down for her first nap no problem, but she fights her second nap.  So she is awake for a very long stretch of time in the afternoon (which is not always tons of fun).  If you are going to manipulate anything, I would push her morning nap later little by little and then cut out the afternoon nap.

  • We just go with the flow with naps....I don't like the idea of always making them take a nap at a certain time just because. DS will sometimes take a 45 minute morning nap and a 45 minute afternoon nap...other days he will take a 3 hour morning nap, and a 1 hour afternoon nap, and some days he will take a 1 hour morning nap, and no afternoon nap.... It's very random for him, but it works, so I'm not messing with it. :)
