3rd Trimester

What happens if you consistently measure large?

At 28 weeks, I measured 30. At 30, I measured 32. At 32 I measured 34 1/2.

At my 28 weeks appointment my nurse told me that they didn't worry about measuring large until it was consistent. Well, in my opinion, it's consistent now! I am going to bring it up at my next appointment but I'm pretty impatient and would like to know what this usually results in :)

Re: What happens if you consistently measure large?

  • Your fundal height measurement can be +/- 2cm and be normal.  It sounds like your are measuring a bit bigger but still in normal range.  It could mean that your due date is off, could be position of baby, etc

Im sure if they are concerned that they will do an ultrasound...try not to stress...uit sounds like your on the higher end of normal :)

  • I fairly certain that the belly measurements have a range considered normal and that yours falls within that range.  If the dr is concerned then they usually order an u/s to get measurements that way.  If those measurements agree you are measuring large some drs will recommend induction or even c-section, but that depends a lot on the dr.

  • Ohhh ok I thought my OB had said 2 or more was considered large or small. I feel a little better, thanks.

I also forgot to mention that I'm at risk for PTL because of my blood pressure (I don't really understand but last time it was 140/40 and they freaked out and told me that I was at risk) and because I've been having BH like crazy. Does that make a difference?

  • I measured over 3 weeks ahead for months. Then as I neared my due date, measurements slowed down to 2 weeks ahead. Big baby, stretched out baby, lots of fluid, there can be lots if explanations! No need to worry though. So often the U/S and fundal measurements are way off.

  • PS. For me too, I was told he has a big head which could result in c-section but doc said you just have to see what happens as labor progresses if that actually NEEDS to happen.

  • I am not a medical prof...

i think the BP might be an issue to watch but i think the fundal height is within a normal range.

I would talk to your OB and see if you need to monitor your BP at home

Also, BH are normal...i had them from week 30 until delivery and while everyone is different I know lots of women who felt more BH with their 2nd...but if you feel the BH are becoming a timed pattern ever you should call your OB

  • I'm measuring large, too. When I was 27.3 I was measuring 29 weeks. Today, at 29.5 weeks, I am measuring 31 weeks. My doctor said she isn't concerned at all, and it could just mean I am having a slightly large and healthy baby. She said she would be concerned if I were measuring small. She said we'll be doing an u/s around 34-36 weeks to get a better measurement, but otherwise, everything is just fine. She said it's normal to be off by 2 cm either way.

  • I just went to the doctor today.  I am 28 weeks, but measuring 30-31 weeks.  The baby weighs 3.2 pounds according to the ultrasound which is in the 90th percentile.  I don't have gestational diabetes.  The doctor said they'll continue to monitor the weight and if at the end the baby is 10-11 pounds they will consider a c-section.  Otherwise, they'll have me try for a natural birth.
