Food restrictions while breastfeeding?

Anyone heard/know of any? Like sushi? Medium rare steaks? Ya know the stuff we can't eat now while preggo?

Re: Food restrictions while breastfeeding?

  • Aside from tons of caffiene and alcohol I believe you can have whatever you want. Your lo may react to things you eat while bf but I believe you'd jushave to wait and see on that one.

  • I think you still wanna avoid mercury heavy fish, or at least eat in moderation.

  • What about nuts?  This has been on my mind.  (I have not taking a breastfeeding class yet...July 20th)  I am a teacher and I had/will have again the librarian's child who is allergic to nuts.  She is a good friend of mine and she said she devoured peanut butter while pregnant and then her son ended up with the nut allergy.  I have been eating peanut butter nonstop...I LOVE IT.  I asked her if she ate peanut butter while she was breastfeeding and she said no because it wasn't recommended.  (The first time I asked her she had to think about...couldn't really remember.)  So back to my question...what about nuts??

Unless you have a family history of allergies, you don't have to avoid nuts. I eat peanut butter like crazy and I do not plan to stop unless my baby reacts to it.

  • I ate basically anything I wanted when BFing. I tried to cook my meat and eggs, but I ate a lot of fish, and raw at that. I think the key is moderation for everything. My son tolerated everything I ate, spicy, gassy, etc. Every kid is different though.

FTR, I eat sushi when pregnant, and cooked fish as well. I avoid really large fish whenever possible, but without fish there would be next to nothing for me to eat.

I asked my OB about this a while ago when I couldn't tolerate any protein except for peanut butter. He said consuming it while pregnant has no affect on LO's future allergies but to check with my pedi about having it while BF. I plan to wait until our first appointment with the pedi to get all the dos/don'ts of foods while BF.

I know that listeria isn't as much of a concern so deli meat and cheese are back on the table.  I would keep my mercury low, but other than consuming tons of alcohol or caffeine, no problem.

I think some people do not drink while breastfeeding, but I plan to drink and just be careful about it - I rarely had more than one drink or two before I was pregnant, so I wouldn't anticipate doing it afterwards.

You most likely will want to avoid gassy foods such as cabbage/spinach/beans. What you eat effects the baby.

This is what I've heard. Onions too.

Like others said, I think it's a lot of paying attention to what you eat and then seeing if it impacts LO and adjusting.
