2.9 year old saying "Shut up"

We are going through a phase I'd like to do without. My son learned 'shut up' recently. And he knows how to say it and that it gets us upset. I have put him in time out, I have taken toys away, I have talked calmly, I have talked not so calmly.

Ultimately he says "I'm sorry, shut up is a bad word". But when he doesn't get his way, again he will say it. I am at my wits end because now he is spitting after he says it and it takes all of me not to lose it.

I am 31 weeks pregnant and I'm exhausted...any other moms have any advice?

TIA!!

Re: 2.9 year old saying "Shut up"

  • Have you tried 1-2-3 Magic?  It is a great way to deal with this kind of behavior without having to spend a lot of time doing discipline.  Good luck - our DD is almost 3 and has been pushing the limits like crazy, too!

  • Loading the player...
  • have you tried ignoring it?  he's doing it to get a reaction.  i know it can be hard and so frustrating, but saying something simple like "that's not a nice thing to say, we do not say that" and then redirecting immediately might work. it will take a few days to see the difference but it has made a huge difference for us.

we tried everything to deal with my DD's hitting (2.5 yrs) and this is what works by FAR.  anything else just made the hitting worse cuz she wanted to keep seeing what we would do... i'm not saying we've eliminated hitting, but when she does it, it is over in about 30 seconds now.

  • DS is now saying Shut Up too.  He says it when he's mad.  So far we've been ignoring it at home and he is using it less.  When he says it out in public it sounds really bad and we've been telling him that it isn't nice and redirect his attention somewhere else.

  • Thanks ladies. I am trying the ignoring it route now. I saw some posts and I started last night. He said it repeatedly because he was trying to see if I could hear him. I just ignored it and he stopped.

We will see what happens.  Thanks for all the advice.

    Ahhh the terrible twos!!
