NBR ? Help: Gave dog a flea bath and he now shakes, hides, and won?t eat

My husband gave our dog a flea bath (Sergeants SenturyPro) 2.5 weeks ago and since then, our 1yr old dog has episodes where he will run around with his tail tucked, shake and find a place to hide.  He will come out of it and be fine again, but there is no telling when it will happen.  He has NEVER done anything like this before the flea bath and we washed him again in Dawn soap and then have taken him to the vet and the emergency care center since that time.  Have any of your dogs ever gone through something like this?  If so, how long did it last?  What seemed to help your dog?  Any insight that you can give would be a huge help.  Thank you so much!

  • Try posting this on the pets board of TheNest.  They will probably be able to help you better than a bunch of ladies thinking about being pg.

  • WHY do you feel the need to post this to 1st AND 2nd tri? WE ARE NOT VETS!

(and if you are going to cry about this and other posts telling you so, you shouldnt be on the bump/nest.)

  • Thanks again to those who want to help.  (Usually...people only go to one board, so I post on more than one to see if I can reach as many people as possible.  I had no idea it would offend anyone or else I wouldn't have done so.  Just trying to figure out what's going on with my dog.)
  • call your vet now!

He might be having a terrible reaction on his skin, and it sounds like he might be in pain!

  • I will post to you, some of us can think of our fur babies too. My dog had a similar reaction to the meds you put down the back. It was just too much pesticide for him. He wouldn't eat for several days and looked miserable. It probably made him sick. I fed him eggs on top of his food. He eventually just got over it. I would make sure he is not reacting to something in his environment or hasn't done something wrong that he usually gets punished for.

     Hope he's okay!

  • Your first problem is you used a store bought brand.  Sargeant's and any other grocery or discount store brand is not ok for your pet.  They use harse and out of date chemicals in their products.  These types of products have been known to cause neurological problems in dogs and cats.  You should be using the topical drops such as Advantage or Frontline from your VET.  And ONLY from your vet.  Call your vet immediately and tell them what you did and ask for them to check your dog. Then get the prescription for the topical drops from them.

  • our dog used to do this right after the bath, but not after that.  maybe he's got post-traumatic stress disorder??
  • My dog is a freak and does not like to bathe (what dog really does) and he used to really freak out. Now that he is older, he only wigs out the night after the bath and then is fine.

Good question for your vet. Is this his first bath/flea bath? Has he done this before???
