More Qs: Anyone use the oil cleansing method? WDYT? Facial moisturizer, what kind?

I have heard good things about the OCM.  I will probably try it as soon as I can get organized enough to buy the necessary products.  Also, I have major combination skin and need recs for a moisturizer.  Coconut oil is an option, but I don't want to SMELL like coconut OR have to keep it in the fridge (I live in TX.)  What about jojoba oil?  Any other ideas?

Thanks!

  • I've had mixed results with the oil cleansing method, but it may be my own fault.  It takes way longer than just washing my face, so a few times per week if I'm in a hurry I'll use my old soap.  If I use the recommended hot water with a washcloth to remove the oil my face immediately feels really dried out, but later in the day it tends to get greasy.  I had better equilibrium using normal soap and moisturizer.

I'm just starting to try out shea butter and almond oil for moisturizers, and I'm liking them so far but it's only been 3 days.

  • I have mild acne and two or three times a week instead of using a facewash with salicylic acid I use just straight jojoba oil from trader joe's. It works great in the shower if you let it steam a bit then gently massage with a washcloth. I also think it does a great job getting makeup off, but if I have makeup on I usually follow up with some kind of toner to get anything that was left behind. I think the oil you use depends a lot on your skin type. For me, I have oily skin but it can get dry (especially after swimming) but jojoba doesn't make me break out (it is supposed to help clear your pores). If you have dryer skin you might want to look into other oils. I tried it first with grapeseed, castor and some tea tree but it was too harsh for me.

  • yep. I use a mix of olive oil, castor oil and tea tree oil while in the shower and then use olive oil/tea tree oil as a moisturizer. no problems! If I am not careful I can sometimes get it in my hair... which isn't all that terrible but can bother me.

If I wear makeup, I use a makeup remover too.

I have serious adult acne (cystic) and in fact sensitive, dry skin (I'm older), and the oil cleansing method was an unmitigated disaster for me.  The oil for moisture route was also a complete fail.

  • I have been using it for awhile and love it! My skin has never been better. I mix different oils in small batches, that way I can change my formula with the seasons and my mood. It also keeps the oil from going rancid.

Right now, it is a blend sweet almond, apricot seed, lavender and chamomile essential oils. Other good oils are olive oil (great for the winter), grapeseed, jojoba, and avocado.

I run a washcloth under hot water, wring out, and place over my face to open my pores. Then, I massage the oil into my face for a minute or so (great for removing make-up, too!). Finally, I run the wash cloth under the hot water again, place over my face to steam for a few seconds and the remove the remaining oil.

As a bonus my hand are much more moisturized and my nails are growing and look better than they have before.

GL and hope that you find something that works for you.

Lurker here... I've been using coconut oil for modified OCM and as a moisturizer for 2 years now. I also have combo skin (and I'm very prone to blemishes, particularly blackheads). It's great for my dry areas and I just go a little more lightly on the oilier areas and have never had any issues.

We're in Oklahoma right now and I keep mine in the bathroom with no problems. And FTR, my husband despises coconut and has never said a word about me smelling like it. I also use it in my hair.
