No wipes for newborns?? FTM - advice needed.

So I keep reading that its not recommended to use wipes on newborns. So when can you start using wipes? And what did you use to clean baby up when not using wipes?

Where have you read that? What do they say about it? I used wipes from day one with my first and he's fine. I think that I made sure they were sensitive, unscented wipes but that was it. Interesting, I've never heard of that!

My preemie had wipes used on him from day one. Unscented alcohol free wipes. That said, there is some info I've read that said even those shouldn't be used with diaper rash. You are just supposed to use water if your baby has bad diaper rash.

I read that too! I think it was What to expect when your expecting.......it also said to use cotton balls? I suppose you could ask your nurse or doctor, I plan to use sensitive non-alch wipes like pps. I asked my sisters and they said the same thing, wipes from day one.

Here it's just common practice not to use wipes for the first 2-4 weeks or so. I'm going to be using soft wash-cloths (wash + reuse) and I also have some packages of large cotton squares. Sort of like the ones you would use for your face (like with make-up remover) but larger. With water.

Yup. Its also in the "what to expect the first year" book too and I had never heard of people not using wipes on a NB!!! Which is why I did a "whaaaaaat????" type reaction to it! COTTON BALLS! REALLY?!?! lol The whole process of cleaning baby up with cotton balls confuzzles me. It seems incredibly inefficient!

I had just never heard that before...glad someone else saw it and wondered about it too!

My hospital recommends this but didn't give a decent excuse as to why... its a bunch of BS in my opinion and I had my mom sneak me in a pack after I had DD

At birthing class they told us that if you're having a boy and getting him circ'd that you can't use wipes until it heals, but if you're having a girl or not getting a circ then wipes are fine.

Where did you read that? I used wipes from Day 1 with DD and plan to do the same with my DS.

Our prenatal class instructor told us just to use washcloths and warm water. But the packing list the hospital gave us included wipes! (Probably for the disposability factor) So I don't think it's a big deal as long as you use the right ones (unscented, alcohol free as people have said).

I had the same "WTF" reaction when I saw that in books and in our class as well, but checked with many of my 2nd and 3rdTM friends and they all said that as long as you get unscented, alcohol free wipes, you'll be fine and that cotton balls are a disaster- if you absolutely don't want to use wipes, use the large square make up pads, but not cotton balls. We only have Pampers Sensitive wipes thusfar and they are unscented and alcohol free so that's what we'll be using.

this is information that I ignore. I bought the sensitive wipes for Cora and that's what we're using. I don't have time or patience to deal with other things.

We used wipes from Day 1, but at the same time, after using cloth wipes and baby washcloths with plain water for the same job- I prefer the cloth, just because one wipe will take care of everything.

With DS the hospital gave us sensitive wipes and almost gauze-like pads to wet and wipe his bottom. The wipes were easier because the meconium is so hard to wipe off. I think its just a sensitivity issue. Their skin is so sensitive right after birth.

They used pampers sensitive wipes in the NICU, and I'm continuing using them at home.

I figured if they weren't safe to use, they wouldn't be used on little 2lb preemie babies with super sensitive skin.

You can go granola/crunchy and just use a rag and water. It's cheaper and better for the enviroment, but a pain to do.

Never heard of this - I only use sensitive skin ones. If you want to you could use a wash cloth or another cloth rag.

our hospital did not use wipes (they provided super soft disposable cloth's and warm water). We didn't use wipes for the first week but use wipes now.

We used gauze pads....wipes don't clean up the meconium very well, imo. After a few days we started using wipes. I plan to use the gauze this time, too. That is also what the hospital provided.

I was surprised to find that our hospital provided cloths instead of wipes as well. We used those for the first few days and now that we're home I'm transitioned to wipes because that's what we have here, Ironically she got a slight rash at the hospital using the cloths. Go figure...
