Starting solids...

I know my LO is nowhere near starting solids. But, do you go on adjusted age for this too? So if I wanted to start at 6months, I would start at 6 months adjusted?

Re: Starting solids...

  • We started Andrew at 6 months actual, 3 adjusted.  We were told he needed more practice so that's why they started us then.  He did okay, but honestly didn't seem ready to me.  He ended up then refusing solids for months and restarting around 9 months.

If I did it again I'd probably start at 4-5 months adjusted, I think, but it's hard to say since I didn't do it that way!

  • It's probably more important to look for signs of readiness rather than going by a number.

We actually tried giving her some BM on a spoon first to see how she did with it.  You want your LO to be able to hold his/her head up well, sit decently and not have a big tongue thrust reflex.

  • We started at 6 months actual, 3.5 months adjusted.  The boys were showing signs of readiness at that point.  And from working in EI I know that the longer you delay solid introduction the more adverse babies can become to the textures of foods.
