Insect Repellent update

I just put the big article (from infantrisk) on 0-3, but the relevant bit was

the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that DEET concentrations between 10% and 30% are equally as safe for children over 2 months of age. Thus, be sure to use an insect repellent on your child that corresponds to the time spent outdoors because the risks of adverse effects are far outweighed by the protection from insect-borne disease.

So if you are going to be outside this weekend, consider using some of a low DEET spray on your little ones. Chemicals aren't great, but West Nile is worse.

I've tried the netting, and it did not work well over his stroller. He got bit. Sad

I was wondering abotu these, Calli. I haven't used them, I figured they "blew" a chemical at you with a fan, so I didn't know how safe they would be to have around a baby. You use them comfortably around the tiny one?

  • do the clip-ons work?

I really can't afford a sh*tty product when the skitters carry disease.

    Ugh! *head to deask*

Here, I was worried about Lydia getting bit by mosquitoes and getting West Nile when I have these at home! I bought them specifically for her! This mommy needs some sleep....

  • The clip-ons are a great idea.  I never thought to use them.     I found the mosquito net provided some protection, but there were a few that still managed to get through and my LO got a bite but he didn't seem to notice it at all. I'd rather he didn't get bit at all.

What about if you have your baby in a baby carrier instead of a stroller when you are outside?  Are there mosquito nets or something for that?

  • I used a clip on for myself last summer and it seemed to be pretty effective.  I am VERY allergic to mosquito bites (like if I get one the bite ends up being the size of a softball!) so I don't mess around with products that don't work.  I will be hooking one of these to Will's carrier when we go out Monday night!

  • The clip on repellant only works if you are stationary and really only protects one side of your body. So if you clip it on your front, they'll still attack your back. I haven't tried it for LO yet though, but it might be more effective if you put it on their car seat or something.

What netting did you try? my MIL gave me this:

and it works great. There are little gaps on each side but I just pad the inside with a blanket that blocks those tiny holes and I've never had a problem with bugs. I really like it for when it's sunny too because it's a light color and it lets the breeze in so she doesn't get too hot but can also be in the shade.

  • I think I had West Nile as a teenager, does that mean my baby is getting West Nile antibodies through my milk?  Cuz that would be even better than Off.  ;)

  • When DH takes Ankaret to Saskatchewan this summer I'll make sure he takes some decent repellant.  We are really lucky to live in a pocket where there are no mosquitoes, so we don't have to worry about it at home.
