Were we separated at birth? Horchata and tacos al pastor (no onions, just cilantro on flour tortillas) are my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE. With LOTS of lime. Don't skimp on the lime!!
Gah. I feel a tear coming to my eye!
I feel like a crack dealer, but I will tell you how I make my homemade horchata---I tried for ages to do it the right abuela approved way, but mine never turned out. Seriously, I tried all spring! I use do a 1/2 and 1/2 method where I fill whatever I'm drinking from with 1/2 milk (not skim, girl, tastes like water) and 1/2 vanilla flavored rice milk. I add some shakes of cinammon and then maybe a tsp or so of vanilla. You'll need sugar, but you can do it to your taste. Then throw it in a blender with an ice cube---you'll get everything blended nicely and not have the cinammon floating on top.
Re: Katywren, my horchata twin
Ok, almost twins. I like corn tortillas, and onions...
Gah! I'm gonna have to make that. I'm shopping tonight. Can't wait.
I did! I LOVE horchata!!
Why did I have to see this post AFTER I came home from grocery shopping? You would think that we would have good horchata in NYC, what with Spanish Harlem and Jackson Heights, Queens, but no dice.
The best horchata I had was at a burrito stand in the Mission district in San Fran. Yummy, I want to buy a ticket stat.
Ar- I am going to try out your version.
And you will LOVE it! I made some horchata popsicles today with mixing leftovers with a little half and half. AMAZING!
