What color are your baby's eyes?

Is it different from when they were born?  I've heard people say all babies' eyes are blue when they are born and I've also heard all babies' eyes are brown.  No clue which, if either, is right.   My kiddo's eyes are blue and I'm really hoping they stay that way!

Re: What color are your baby's eyes?

  • Babies are born with blue eyes.  You can usually guess depending on the shade of blue if they will stay blue or change.  My niece and nephew were born with light blue, and are still blue eyed and blond haired.  Rylee has dark blue, so I'm guessing hers will change to brown like me or hazel like DH.

See, that's the thing.  A friend of ours' daughter was born with brown eyes and they stayed brown.  Makes me wonder if the "all babies are born with ____ color eyes" is just an old wives tale.

  • Most babies are born with blue eyes. Generally, most Caucasian babies are born with blue or grey eyes, and they can either change or stay blue/grey. If the baby is born with brown, they will stay brown.
  • Dark dark brown...he's half Asian, though, so that may be why.

  • His eyes are a blue/gray.  I doubt they will turn brown, as neither DH nor I have brown eyes, but maybe hazel.  His eyes are pretty close to the color of my eyes now.

I have a friend whose baby was born with brown eyes, but I've always heard the "all babies are born with blue eyes" thing, too.  Guess it's just "most" instead of "all".

  • Macy's are dark blue but I anticipate them turning brown.  At least I hope they turn brown so she can have at least one feature from me!

  • I had heard the "all newborns have blue eyes" thing, too, but to our surprise, Rowan was born with dark brown eyes like mine.  My husband and I are both Caucasian, too.  Not sure how they'll end up, but I thought it was interesting!

  • DS1 had green eyes at birth, that turned brown. DS2 had blue/gray eyes, His are still greyish as of now. Peyton has grayish eyes, but they are kind of dark, so Im guessing they may be brown. but we shall see. Not ALL babies are born with blue eyes.

Callie's are blue and will probably stay blue. The Dr said because they're so blue still and are lightening that they'll likely remain blue. MH has blue eyes, so I'm not surprised.

I think it is only caucasian babies that are all born with blue eyes.  DS's are  dark blue/grey.  I love them because they match all his clothes but I have a feeling they will change to brown.

  • My DDs are blueish grey. I dont know if hers will stay that way or turn brown. My DH has blue/green eyes and I have brown eyes so I have a feeling that she will end up with hazel eyes but I hope not  because I LOVE the color of my DH's eyes.

  • dd2 has dark blue/gray eyes right now.  this is what dd1 had as well for the first year of her life.  gradually dd1's eyes have gotten more brown.  i guess you'd call it hazel since it's not the really rich brown that dh has.  i have blue eyes, fwiw.

  • Olivia's eyes are an undecidable color. No one has been able to say "Yes they are *inset color*" They are kinda greenish, hazelish, type with some brown swirled in. They are weird, only time will tell I guess.

I read that babies can be born with blue or brown eyes, but if they are born with brown eyes it is either very unlikely or impossible (I can't remember which) that they will turn blue.  My LO was born with dark blue/gray eyes and they are getting lighter blue everyday.

I also heard that if both parents have blue eyes, there is a 100% chance the baby will have blue eyes.  DH and I both have blue eyes so I guess we will see!

  • My daughter's were BLUE from day one. My 1st son's were BROWN from day one! Aiden's were DARK. Almost black. But now, they are slate blue with brown tones to the center of the eye. They may go either way!

This. Also, if neither parent has brown, baby can't get brown. At least that's what my science teacher told me in 8th grade.

Her eyes were a dark, dark blue when born but are lightening up now to a bluish gray color.  I have green eyes and my husband has brown so we'll see what she ends up with- I would guess probably hazel.

Eye color isn't really as simple as if both parents have this color this is the only one possible, it's determined by a bunch of different alleles.  Basic science classes teach basic genetics with just a dominant and recessive (basically, two choices) and many teachers will group eye color in there because it's an easy illustration that kids can visualize however it's technically incorrect.  There is no "dominant" and "recessive" gene for eye color it's different combinations of genes that combine that's why there are so many different color combinations and why a baby in a family of all brown eyed people will randomly end up with the blue eyes of a great great aunt on the dad's side or something like that.  /science geek out.

My parents both had brown eyes and I ended up with the green eyes my grandmother had.  My mom's parents had blue and green eyes and she has dark dark brown.  Funny story actually- in middle school one of my mom's teacher told the class that if neither of your parents had brown eyes you couldn't have them.  She was so upset because she thought that it meant that her parents weren't really her parents.

  • DD was born with light hazel eyes and they are darkening up a lot!  She's half Korean, half German, so I feel that plays into her eye color a lot.

  • Mine both had blue/gray eyes. DD's is changing and I see a lot of brown in there now. I'm sure she'll end up having brown as I'm sure I don't carry any recessive genes for eye color.

  • They're dark blue, maybe greyish. I would've sworn they were brown in the DR, but he didn't open them that widely to see =P

H has brown and I have blue, so he could stay or switch to brown...

I've read this, too, and it's held true with friends' and relatives' babies.

    J. has dark blue eyes & I assume they'll turn brown at some point like mine & MH's :)
