XP (from fb group): Job questions - wwyd?

I'm planning on my last day in the office to be Friday, September 30th and as of now, I'm not planning on returning to work after my 12 week maternity leave. Because I'm covered under FMLA for those 12 weeks I don't have to tell my job whether or not I'm returning when I initially take my leave. What would you ladies do about telling your boss that you wouldn't be returning? Would you wait until the technical last two weeks of your leave and express it then or would you return to work and work two weeks and then quit? I feel like the last option is so irrelevant since I would have been out of the office for three months, whats the point of coming back for 2 weeks? Lots to think about and your opinions are appreciated!

Some background info - I wouldn't owe the company anything for PTO days or insurance since all of those things would be taken care of prior. Also, I have a horrible relationship with my boss and I don't feel I owe it to her to let her know before my leave (esp. because legally I can change my mind at any time during those 12 weeks).

Thanks everyone!

  • According to my HR lady, even though I don't plan on coming back, I am still covered under FMLA for that 12 weeks. So I plan on telling my boss the beginning of August that I plan on working up until the baby is born and then not coming back afterwards. But my job is still protected for that 12 weeks, so I can change my mind if need be.

Going back for 2 weeks is definitely not an option. I don't even get what the point of that would be. If you really don't want to tell them beforehand, I would tell them maybe a month or so prior to your leave ending. It'd be nice if they had some notice to find someone to replace you.

  • I'm planning to do the same thing. But since my insurance is through work, I'm not planning to share the news until I'm on DH's insurance plan after the birth.  My understanding is I may owe the company for the cost of my insurance while I'm out on FMLA if I don't return.  I plan to use sick and vacation time first - or what's left of it.  We're going to play the exact "giving notice" date by ear, but I will not be returning to my desk.

  • I would keep it to yourself until close to the end of your leave.  They do not need to know if you haven't been planning to return or if you just couldn't leave your baby.  I was in the same situation with DD (2 years ago) and I played along that I'd be back, and 2 weeks before I was due back to the office, i met with my boss and told her my decision.  FWIW, I have been on DH's health ins since we got married in '04.
  • I agree with all the pp and plan to do the same.  My question is, do you call and give your notice or do it face to face etc?  My hubby works for the company so I will be in with the girls to visit and can meet with my manager then (and it won't be the last time I bring the girls in either)... so I am thinking of meeting with my manager when hubby has the girls (in the office) and having a notice of leave letter already to go with me...
