I had to sell my super cute car when I found out I was pregnant because it was only a 2 door and just too small for a family car. I started driving MH Yukon because it was costing us a small fortune for him to get to work, sooo now its just to expensive for me too drive and honestly we just dont need a vehicle that seats 8. I get to pick out a new( used) car or small suv and i really have no idea what I want or need. My only thing is I would like to get my jogging stroller in without have to take it apart and its gotta be fuel friendly! Tell me what you have, what you love/hate about etc. I figure as fellow moms you guys would know what works and what doesn't!! Thank you sooo much!!
Re: I need car recs pretty please :)
I just traded in my Lexus IS250 (way too small) for a Toyota Highlander and I love it! I'm not sure what kind of gas mileage I'm getting right now because I filled it up 8 days ago and haven't refueled yet (although i'm now at 1/4 tank left, so I'll know soon). I figure It can't be that bad if I only have to fill it up every 10 days or so. I like the fact that the highlanders have a back seat that easily folds down, so you have the option of up to 6 or 7, but only have 4 or 5 seats most of the time. It's also built on an Avalon frame so it drives like a car.
Also, my sister has a Toyota Avalon and it is very roomy. The trunk has plenty of room for a jogging stroller and they are very nice on the inside. Confession....I did look at one of those very hard, but after talking it over with H we decided on the SUV. We are the type of people who will own cars for 7 to 10 years and in about 3 years we decided we would probably want the SUV after J gets involved in T ball, soccer, etc.

We drive a Nissan Versa and love it. It'll eventually need to be upgraded once we have more kids, but for now, it does great. Our jogging stroller fits in the back (it takes up most of the space, but whatever) since its a hatch. The seats fold down 60/40, we can put Charlie's seat on the single seat and still put down the two other seats and have tons of space when we travel.
The Versa started being made back in 2007ish, so you'd be able to find a used one. It gets pretty decent MPG, too - about 28 - 30 mpg on the highway when its all broken in.

when we moved to MN, i sold my passat for a rav4. i thought i would hate the rav4, just based on seeing them in the past. in fact, we almost didnt even look at it, but consumer reports rated it so high, we had to take a look. my H and i test drove a TON of cars/wagons/suv's
we settled on this one because:
4 wheel drive, and stability (important here)
gas mileage is fab...similar to a car, not suv
carries 5 people, plus a dog/and or our BOB stroller in the back.
the back seats fold down flush/flat, so that if we wanted, we could sleep back there
it drives very nice (we also drove the CRV and did not like the ride)
also, it has not had any recalls
I love my Nissan Altima. It has a push button start and a button on the doors to lock/unlock the car. I never have to take my keys out of my purse. It is so nice when I have J, his diaper bag, my purse, etc.
It gets pretty good gas milage, around 28 mpg. Also, we have a travel system stroller and it fits in the trunk and I still have room for groceries.
We just ditched the Versa to get a Grand Caravan. MUCH more space... in the Versa (we also had a hatch) we had to lay down the back seat to get the stroller in there. There was no room to hold L to feed him if we were stopped somewhere... And if we got 28 MPG we were lucky. So far with our van, we have SO much space. I have now fed L in 4 different parking lots since Friday... SO nice!!! We are going on a long trip this weekend and before we would have needed to borrow space in my mom's car for his gear, but now all our luggage, pillows, sleeping bags, coolers, PnP, stroller, etc, will fit in our car. The mileage is pretty good so far... it tells us how many more miles til empty and if we drive economically we can drive 10 miles before the number on the dash changes at all, so we are THRILLED with it.
ETA: We just called the insurance company and our payments are now $5 cheaper for the brand new van than they were for the 3 year old Versa because the van is safer. So safer car for LO to ride in + cheaper car insurance = AWESOMENESS!
THIS! We love our accord - plenty of room for us, DD, the jogging stroller, and "stuff" around the stroller. Great gas mileage and really reliable so far.
It sounds like you might like a smaller SUV, like a CRV or RAV4.
We have a 2011 Honda Pilot and I love it. It's a larger SUV than the CRV/RAV4, but not too ginormous. It has a 3rd row of seating, but we almost always have the 3rd folded down. The cargo area is large when it's folded down. It's very roomy. We were able to fit 4 adults + LO + all of LO's crap and our crap on a recent road trip. LOs car seat is in the middle row, middle seat. It has the LATCH system.
DH and I are the type to drive our cars into the ground, so it was worth it to us to get the larger SUV now. My last car was a 1997 4Runner, which I also loved. DH drives a 2000 Accord and it's still working great, so I'd also recommend an Accord, but a newer one of course.
Edited to add my comment:
I love my CR-V! It has been SO good to me. It never gives me any problems! I traded in my fancy SUV that was a POS for my trusty 97 CR-V. It has 120k miles on it, but just like heyitsme says, it has a lot more life left in it. If I didn't want an Odyssey, I'd keep my CR-V forever.
