Success after IF

How much milk does your 2yr. old drink?

Bella drinks 16-24 ounces a day and I'm wondering if that is too much.

Also, does your child still drink from the bottle? We haven't tried taking it away from DD, not sure if I feel like we have to do it now but wondering where others stand on the issue.

If you child is done with bottles, how did you make the transition? Did it take long?

TIA

Re: How much milk does your 2yr. old drink?

  • Our pedi told us at the boy's 18 month, and 3 year well check that they should each be getting about 3 6-8 oz glasses a day, so it sounds like Bella is right where she should be!

  • Jacob drinks about the same.  And its probably on the high side, but he doesn't eat a lot of yogurt (despite me offering it), but he does eat some cheese.  Our pedi said that as long as he still has a good appetite, its not a concern.  We give him a sippy of milk at meals and he gets water other times of the day.

He hasn't had a bottle since he was 15 months, but we just replaced each bottle with a sippy of milk and that worked.

  • He drinks about 16-20 oz a day. The doctor said keep it close to 16 oz. He drinks it from a sippy cup, but honestly, it's just like a bottle. First thing in the morning and right before bed we warm it up for him and he guzzles it, usually finishing it in less than a minute. Seriously! We also give him a smaller serving at lunch time, cold, and he's much less interested in it then.

  • Ped wants c to drink 24 oz a day so sounds like Bella gets enough! We transitioned to straw cup at 9 months....

  • Cal drinks maybe 2 full sippy cups a day of milk.  I'm not even sure how much that is?

He only ever drank BM from bottles (and only when at daycare b/c I BFd).  Once I stopped pumping when he was 15 months, that was the end of bottles.  But we also introduced a sippy when he started solids at 6.5 months, so by the time we stopped BM bottles he was used to using a sippy for everything else.

My friend has a daughter 1 month older than Cal who still drinks milk from a bottle (before bed only)...I think LucyP's Jack does too.  I don't think it's a big deal.

  • My dd hardly drinks any milk at all.  She does not seem to like it no matter what I do to it.  I try to load her up on yogurt, cheese, vitamins with extra calcium.  My mom said I was the same way.

  • We aren't quite two yet, but she drinks about 12 oz or so of milk a day.  I honestly don't keep up with it very closely AT ALL.

My pedi is a FREAK about taking bottles away at the first birthday, and since I stopped pumping then anyway, we ditched 'em.  She never got many bottles so it wasn't a big deal.  I just put her BM or WCM in a sippy and never looked back.

He's also a big stickler about taking the paci away by two years old, but I'm not sure we're going to make that one.  With the new baby coming at the very end of September and Caro turing two in November, I just can't see doing it now.  She only gets it at night, so I'm not freaking out about it.

  • We switched to sippy cups and to milk at 1 year.  Nothing special in how we switched, I just gave her a cup one day and said no more bottles.

As for how much she drinks, it's crazy.  Milk is the only thing she'll drink with the exception of a couple of sips of water so most days she has easily 32oz of milk.  I've switched to skim and 1% given the amount she drinks.

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • She never took a paci and only got the bottle when she went to the sitter. She does drink from a sippy sometimes..she prefers real cups!

Maybe I will just tell her no more bottles and see how it goes.

  • None.  We took the bottle away at her 2nd birthday, and she refuses to drink milk any other way.  My pedi is fine with this, as long as she gets dairy from other sources.  She also has her on a daily multi-vitamin.

  • Elizabeth probably gets 12-16 ounces a day, but it can vary since I don't how much she drinks at daycare. They get milk with morning snack and lunch and then water with afternoon snack. At home, she gets milk with breakfast and dinner and probably drinks 3-4 ounces each meal.

We got rid of bottles at 13 months at the same time as we were switching from BM to WCM since bottles weren't allowed in the toddler room at her school. So she never had WCM in a bottle, which may have made the transition easier. The adjustment took about a week.

  • I'd say Jude drinks about 18 oz a day give or take.  But he also eats lots of yogurt, cottage cheese, and cheese so I'm not too worried about calcium.  He drinks water other times, no juice yet.  We stopped the bottle when we stopped BFing around 13 months so it was a fairly easy time to transition to a sippy and we've been using that ever since without any issues.

  • Reagan drinks probably a gallon a week, no joke.  She drinks so much milk, but that is her main beverage.  She drinks a little water and that's it.

Yes, Reagan is done with the bottle.  The pedi said at her one year appointment that it was more important to get her off the bottle than it was for her to drink milk.  (Apparently bottles contribute to higher risk of tooth decay, higher risk of ear infections in toddlers, and problems with teeth alignment).  We started replacing one bottle a day with a sippy cup until she was used to it.  She rejected it at first, so we actually went a couple of days with no milk.  But then we reintroduced the sippy and she was drinking from it like a champ in no time.

     Good luck!

  • Does she drink whole milk or lowfat?  If you're concerned she drinks too much, I'd switch to lowfat.  Actually, I'd switch anyway...Cal's been drinking lowfat since before he turned 2.  It's just unnecessary fat, in my opinion (and Dr. Sears').

  • about 2 cups white milk (2%) and another 1-2 cups of "pink" milk or chocolate. (about a tsp of strawberry or choc mixed in. Thanks RoaringRock ;-)  ) She's a skinny mini and doesn't have a lot of sweets, so this is the one way I know she's getting her milk & fats in. She also has some cheese, and yogurt.
