Campers come in

We are going to try to do more camping this summer now that the kids are bigger.  We have a SMALL pop-up camper, the smallest, bare bones model they make.  We bought it off my parents and it hadn't been cared for very well before we owned it.  We think this will be its last season.  Anyway, What do you store IN your camper?  Or do you store everything in the house between trips?    Do you wash all your linens after every trip?  Any way to make the camper beds more comfy?

More general camping questions.  Do you set up a hand washing area at your site?  DH ALWAYS insists on putting a water container with a spout at the end of the picnic table, this drives me insane!  It spashes muddy water right in the middle of our site!  Of course, this trip, the kids couldn't lay off it and kept getting wet and tracking mud into the camper!  I argued its use with DH since there was a bathroom, right across the street from our site.  I may just take a knife to it on our next trip if he insists on using it.  Any tricks to keep the kids on the site?  What do you do if your kids are crying at night?

We only go on one "camping" trip per year...but since I grew up camping I don't really consider it camping because we sleep in cabins :)

Could you buy a special stand for your water - maybe like a folding table? That way you could position it away from things. Or you could put an empty basin underneath it on the ground? We brought water jugs for drinking - but mostly used the water there. We did all handwashing and stuff like that at the bathrooms. Although - now I would probably set something up or just use sanitizer.

When we would unpack as kids - all linens were washed - towels, clothes etc. Not sleeping bags, though. Would mattress pads work on your beds? Or even those egg crate foam pads?

Could you set up a tent and put games and toys in there for them? Each of us kids had their own tent that we had all our stuff in and we liked the privacy. Obv they are too young to sleep in their own tent but they may like the set-up of it to keep them close to the site.

I used to LOVE camping...I miss it. DH has said that the trip we go on is as rustic as he can handle :) which is ok, at least it's something.

  • The stupid water DH brings isn't even drinkable!  We have never really cleaned it well and he just uses the water there, just a PITA in my opinion.  I use hand sanitizing wipes for the kids, but we are usually pretty close to the bathrooms since we have to make frequent trips.  Plus, the kids try to go on their own, especially Brianna.  Next time I am going to remember to bring her her own little potty!  She got so mad when I told her not to go by herself and just kept screaming PEE!  POTTY!  PEE!

We have been using sheets, blankets & comforters.  DH says if it goes, it has to be washed, even unworn clothes.  Of course I pack extra with the kids.  I am on my 9th load of laundry and have lots to go!  We were only gone for TWO nights!  Its crazy.

  • We always wash unworn clothes too...even if we just go to ILs for a night. The whole bag just gets tossed next up the washer. With camping I would just be thinking about bugs and dirt- but I have no clue why we wash clothes that just went to Rochester for 36 hours...just habit I guess.
