I'm pissed

The dogs health and wellness is supposed to be dh's responsibility while I take on the kids needs. Last year he not only let the dogs get fleas but then refused to treat them with anything but some essential oils and this crushed up sea animal shell (it was like sand) which he poured all over our floors (later I proved to him that it is dangerous to inhale and not meant for in doors). For two weeks he insisted he knew best till I told him I was calling an exterminator and he could deal with it or I I would take the baby to my parents. He is super freaked out about Chemicals, as am I but fleas are not safe either! I just found two fleas in our bed. Does this mean we have fleas and I need to have it exterminated again? I couldthroatpunch him. I reminded him, I offered to go get the treatment, and he insisted he had it under control. When is he going to get it? Never mind that our poor dogs have effing fleas and how that must feel for them.

Re: I'm pissed

  • If you found new, live ones more than likely you still have fleas.

  • I'd be pissed too. He obviously does not have it under control.

  • I just put all the bedding in a hot wash with some lavender since I hear fleas hate that. Bonus is that dh hates lavender too and now will have to sleep on it. Does he think this is ok? Did he have fleas in his house growing up? Last year during the flea infestation I was more pissed at him than I have ever been and we argued daily about me wanting to have the house fumigated. It is going to be tough for me not to hit him when he comes home. I think I will break down if lo gets a flea bite. How am I supposed to take my toddler (who has behavioral issues) and infant out all day while they fumigate? Will we have to be out all night too?

  • We treat our dogs monthly with frontline and in the 7 years we've had these dogs they've never had fleas. I know it is chemicals and I understand why some people don't like that, but fleas are gross and I don't want them. I know the product works because we were at our vet and a bug fell off one of the dogs and died, and the vet said 'that's why you use the monthly treatment, because that flea was trying to get on your dog and the medicine just killed it.'

  • We got an infestation of fleas after my husband rescued a ferret he found wandering our neighborhood.  Our two cats ended up with fleas. First we gave them a bath, then a Frontline treatment.  We sprinkled a flea killing agent on the carpet, then vacuumed every day, washed all bedding, etc.  There are loads of homeopathic ways to fight fleas if you google it.

Flea eggs can live for quite a while, but I don't know if you need to fumigate just yet; that's a fairly drastic step, especially with a baby in the house.  It's gross, but the house I grew up in was constantly infested with fleas and I turned out okay, I swear.

  • You let them get fleas when you don't go to the vet as scheduled and get the comfortis or frontline and put it on. With a toddler on the spectrum and a hi needs infant I find it difficult to take two old doggies to the vet. He brought the dogs into the relationship and having their appointments be someone's responsibility works for us (though in this case it doesn't). I'm happy to care for them but he doesn't want me to, and he damn sure doesn't want to go to the pedi or clip baby nails or give meds. It would be too confusi g to keep up with who gave what med when anyhow. As I explained in the op I offered to go (at night when he was at home with the kids) get the stuff when flea season started and he insisted he had it coved. He waits too long then thinks he can put some essential oil on them and it will be all good. My past dogs never had fleas, not ever. But them I put frontlne on them exactly as prescribed.

  • Maybe frontline doesn't work as well where you live but here we get great protection.

  • I guess I. Just wigging bc it got so bad last year. We had to have the house sprayed twice before they left.

  • Our vet gave us Vectra.  It handles fleas and heartworms!  I put them outside for a couple of hours after I apply it so that it rubs in & it's not around DD right after the application.  Ugh.  Fleas are the worst.  Wait no.  Ticks are the worst.  Fleas are a close second.
