? about food and high bp..

Did changing the way eat, help lower your bp. I seen the peri yesterday and she said I had 360 protein in my urine and with the high blood pressure, she thinks I have pre eclampsia, but she wants me to do another urine collection and then will give the official diagnosis. The good thing is, its very mild right now, she was concerned because I am not even in my 3rd trimester yet. But for now she pulled me from work til my next appointment and she told me to cut out boxed, processed, or any packaged food and to cut sodium to 1500 mg a day! I hope by eating better it will lower my bp. Its been about 150/90 ish, so not too high but not low either.

Re: ? about food and high bp..

  • I have been diagnosed with pre-eclampsia and I am 23 weeks, it has been almost a week since my diagnosis. When I was in the hospital for 3 days with doubled medication and complete bed rest my blood pressure went down. Since I have been home on bed rest and I am on a low sodium diet nothing else has changed, my blood pressure is still the same! I have very high blood pressure, running 160/110 though so mine is a lot higher than yours. I figure that low sodium really doesn't hurt and will continue to do it :)

  • I don't have Pre-E but I do have kidney disease and high BP because of it. My nephrologist made it very clear that cutting out sodium is one of the best things you can do for your kidneys (which are involved in Pre-E) and since your kidneys produce a hormone that affects your BP, it's definitely possible it could help a lot. This might be a weird example, but my urinary protein went from 6000 to 3000 the first trimester and they're pretty sure it was because I wasn't eating much sodium!

  • Thank you ladies. It was a wakeup call to go to the grocery store and see how much sodium is in stuff. I am pretty much living on fruit and salad, I guess as it goes on I will get more ideas, but if I can lower my bp then I definately need to try it.

  • I have been on a low sodium diet for quite some time. Just use fresh ingredients and avoid packaged products when cooking. Use dry beans instead of canned. If you do use canned veggies or beans make sure you rinse them before use. Some grocery stores also offer a list of low sodium food they carry. It never hurts to ask.

    Good luck!
