gassy baby...help!

My baby is sooooo gassy! She eats great (BF or from a bottle after I pump) but then stays awake for an hour or so with what I'm pretty sure are gas pains. She squirms around, arches her back, just fussy in general...and also farting a lot! My SIL told me that I should give up dairy, but that is the last thing I want to do. Seriously, I live on cereal these days. Is there something I can do other than give up diary?

Re: gassy baby...help!

  • Try a different bottle, she could be getting air from it. Dr. Brown's are great.

Try mylicon gas drops or gripe water. I hope your figure out what's bothering her!

  • Mylicon or gripe water....but I hate to say it...she is probably milk intolerant or lactose intolerant.  The timing is right.  if you give up dairy, it takes about 3 weeks to notice the difference.

  • DD was incredibly gassy for the first month or so as well, she couldn't sleep well and cried a lot from it...especially at night. I would just rub her belly, bicycle her legs, give her mylicon...but nothing worked. Finally, I tried eliminating dairy from my diet and put her on soy formula (she is bf and ff). It seemed to help right away, but I slowly added dairy back in except for milk at the advice of the pedi (he said that often times it's actually just milk in mom's diet that can cause the senisitivity) and that has worked well. She is soooo much better! Good luck!

  • I meant to mention, I just substituted Soy Milk (until DS developed an allergy to soy) and now Almond Milk in my diet....they aren't bad at all.

  • DD2 was very gassy and it never fully stopped until she was close to 4 mos. Things that did help was switching her to soy formula (I never made enough milk when BF, but cutting dairy should help), lil' tummies gas drops - they seemed to work better than mylicon for us and bicycle leg excercises.  She is fine with dairy now.

  • This is a problem I had constantly with my now 6 month old daughter. from the day she was born she was BF. and also from a week or so after she would scream for like an hour because she hurt. we tried mylocon didn't help.  baby gas x works better. but what we found out when she was 3.75 months old was that she couldnt tollerate the BM. switched her to milk based formula. and it got so much worse. couple days later she was switched to soy milk formula. and is doing so much better. but since BM is heavier than formula, we had to put a bit of rice cereal in with it. good luck to you. I hope it gets better.
