Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

20 Month Old, Severe Constipation Since 3 Months Old

My poor little girl has been on Miralax since 3 months of age. If she as much as misses one dose, she is completely backed up. When she does take it, it is loose and mushy (TMI, sorry) and never a 'normal' poop. I feel terrible, because when it's waterry or mushy, it causes rashes, and if I try cutting the medicine back, she can't go and strains her entire body trying to go. She's going on her third day now with no substantial bowel movements, just smudges of poop in her diaper. She clenches her cheeks together so tightly that it causes severe rash around her rectum. She's crying all the time and it hurts her so bad. I gave her a double dose of her medicine yesterday, and a regular dose this morning. Her pediatrician is putting in a referral for a gastroteroligist (sp?) and they used a gloved finger with vaseline on it to do a rectal exam trying to ease her ability to go.. that was at 11:15 this morning.. she's home now and still nothing. Anyone else have a baby/toddler with this issue? Her diet is normal, she's not picky at all, I don't want her to have to be on this laxative forever, especially since I want to start potty training this summer.

Re: 20 Month Old, Severe Constipation Since 3 Months Old

  • I know exactly what you are going through. My son is the same way. Last week he went 6 days without pooping and trying to poop and just getting smears and that was with upping miralax each day. A suppository didn't even work and he ended up with an enema and he had 4 big balls of poop. I know that part of the problem is they learn that it hurts, so you have to go several months with soft consistency. My doctor recommended toothpaste consistency. My son eats great and isn't that picky either. He eats tons of fruit and vegetables and lots of high fiber foods. This last bout of constipation was due to a banana, which I normally avoid but he wanted one so bad. I wish I was more help but once she gets that poop out just be consistent. I try to get Owen to drink the miralax drink quickly and have to change what I put it in. Right now I give it to him in chocolate milk. I hope the gastroentologist is helpful. I know how hard it is to constantly have to worry about poop. We are waiting on potty training for awhile because I think we have to have this under control first. Oh and try to get her to bend when you see that she is clenching her butt cheeks together. We ended up holding him down on the toilet after the enema because he was just holding it so much that he was locking his knees.

  • Has she seen a gastroenterologist?  If she hasn't, perhaps something to consider as they specialize in the digestive tract and perhaps can shed some light on why your DD is chronically constipated and have other options for you.

Edited: Obviously I didn't read your entire post. Glad your pedi is referring you. I hope you find out what's going on.
