When did you find out the gender of your baby?

With the doctor that we chose, we haven't gotten a single ultrasound. They did one at my first appointment only because they couldn't find the heartbeat with the doppler. It was so quick we didn't even get to really look at the screen nor did we get a picture. Now, here I am at 16 weeks pregnant and the doctor tells us we won't get an ultrasound until August, which is when they'll look for the gender. It's a little upsetting to have to wait longer than all my other pregnant friends. They all found out around 16-17 weeks. When did you find out?

  • Finding out the gender/sex at the 20 week anatomy scan is standard. Your friends here weren't too bright in that they have a higher chance of the sonographer being wrong on their gender/sex guesses since they did that all so early. I had my A/S at 20 weeks 6 days with DD and 20 weeks 0 days with DS. There are plenty of ladies on the month boards who have had to wait until 22-24 weeks. You're worrying too much over nothing.

I found out the gender during my A/S ultrasound at 21.2 weeks!

It's also a lot more accurate if you wait until around 20-22 weeks too!

  • I found out last week, at 16 weeks, but I had had 3 prior ultrasounds since I am in Italy and seeing a private dr.  However you should be having a mid-pregnancy exam (usually at 20 weeks), which includes a thorough ultrasound.  August doesn't seem right.
  • My a/s was at 20wk5days.... very hard to wait I know! I ended up having an ultrasound at 18wks due to some issues I was having so we did find out what we were having a little earlier than planned.

  • I found out at 19weeks at my anatomy scan. If you want to find out sooner you can always pay to have an elective ultrasound.

  • 20-22 weeks is standard.  We only know that we are having a boy because I have weekly ultrasounds currently for complications and he was in the right position at the right time last week, otherwise we wouldn't get a chance until the 20 week anatomy scan.  That being said, with my three girls, I had fewer ultrasounds and wouldn't have trusted anything until after 20ish weeks anyway.  So many sonographers automatically guess girl when they don't see boy parts right away.  It is easy to make errors or wrong guesses too early.

  • A LOT of women only get 1 ultrasound during their pregnancy...at the anatamy scan where finding out the sex of the baby is just a perk... not the purpose of the scan obviously.

My OB doesn't do the a/s until weeks 21-22. We had a gift certificate for an elective ultrasound place and found out the sex of the baby at 16.5 weeks. It was later confirmed at 22 weeks at our a/s.

If you don't want to wait you could always pay for an elective scan... they typically run about $60-100 depending where you live.

  • I found out at our anatomy scan at 18w4d. I had also had 2 prior ultrasounds - a dating scan at 8w3d and NT scan at 13w.

I got another u/s just 2 weeks ago because my doctor couldn't find the hearbeat on the doppler - he was moving around too much!!!

I know it's hard to wait, but the further a long you are the easier it will be to tell the sex as well as make sure all of the organs are present and functioning properly, which is the most important thing!!!

  • I guess it all depends on the doctor and the situation.  We are considered high risk so we get an ultrasound every month.... we found out yesterday (the last day of week 15) that we are having a girl.    A good friend of mine is just 2 weeks behind me and we go to the same OBGYN and they are making her wait until her 20 week appointment in August.  I hope you find out soon :D good luck and congratulations :D

HA! This is pretty presumptuous to assume that everyone who got an early gender songram is 'not too bright', don't you think? I did a lot of research before I chose to get a sonogram for early sex determination, and by 14 weeks, the sex organs are developed enough to determine whether the fetus is a boy or a girl. Yes, the accuracy is a bit lower than if you waited until 20 weeks at an a/s, but not enough to stop me (it's around 3% less accurate). I would be surprised if they were wrong, but I also know it IS a possibility (as there is still a possibility that any of you 20 weekers had sonographers that have guessed incorrectly). Why don't you think twice before you go around assuming everyone is not as smart as you, eh? Thanks.

When I told people at 18 weeks, most were surprised I had found out so early.  Finding out at 16-17w is not the norm.

  • I had/will have anatomy scans with both DD and this LO at 20 weeks.  With DD, they really wanted to schedule it around 22 weeks, but I managed to wheedle them into doing it at 20 because I was moving and couldn't do it with the hospital where I was then living any later (I guess I could have scheduled it at 22 weeks with my new OB but it just seemed like that would be more complicated, plus of course I was impatient).  I'd had previous ultrasounds with her.  With this LO, I've had no other ultrasounds and my OB scheduled the anatomy scan right at 20 weeks.  It varies and I think for some u/s techs it's just easier to determine the gender - not to mention scan for all the other stuff they actually need to look for - a little bit past 20 weeks. I'm 17 weeks now and scheduled mine for the third week of July, so if you're 16 weeks and doing yours in early August, that doesn't sound so off to me.

  • We find out at 20w3d on July 26th. We got a best guess at the NT scan, but you can't really base anything on that.

ETA: I got ultrasounds at 5 weeks and 6 weeks because I was having problems. Then my NT scan (that was optional) was at 12w5d.

  • 17w6d at my a/s.  I get u/s so often, I wasn't concerned about it being "too early".  There was absolutely no doubt they were boys btw.
  • Well, my baby is being stubborn so I still haven't found out!  I go back in this Thursday so hopefully they will be able to see the sex then.  I went in for my a/s when I was a little over 19 weeks.  They couldn't tell me the sex because the baby ended up flipping to face down position for most of the u/s.  Then, I went in later that same week to get another peek and the baby would not open its legs wide enough to get a definite shot.  But, usually people find out between 18-22 weeks.  When you go before 18 weeks its not always definite.  Try to be patient!  I know I have had to be patient!!  If you really can't wait until August, you could try to schedule an elective u/s.

We found out at 19w, but we paid for an elective u/s. If we woud have waited we wouoldn't have knonw until 22w. Where I am from it is very common to have only 1 u/s and that is usually scheduled between 20 - 22w. At 16w most people don't find out unless they pay to find out.

No, the error rate at 14 weeks is about 50%, which is about the same error rate of flipping a coin.

  • Early guess at 16 weeks.  We were at a perinatologist's office for a heart beat issue and I asked if they could take a peek.  We were told they saw a girl but to not go buying pink yet.  That was understandable.

We had confirmation at 20 weeks.

  • We found out at exactly 19 weeks.  The average time frame most people find out is between 18-22 weeks.

  • We got an initial ultrasound at 12 weeks and then the anatomy scan/gender ultrasound at almost 20 weeks...

No good that you have to wait so long, I would go crazy.  It is because they are so booked they can;t get you in for an ultrasound until August or is that just their policy?

  • MrzHozMrzHoz member

We were supposed to find out at 18 weeks, but ended up finding out at 15 weeks because I had a bad episode and ended up in the ER.

You can have an elective u/s in the mean to find out or change doctors if you are not happy with the policies. I know I would be happy with that few and far between u/s's.
