WWYD - re travel system

I bought the Graco SafeSeat with DS in a gender neutral pattern and it's the travel system - so I'm not worried about that if this baby is a boy or girl it will work.  But I don't see SafeSeat as much as I see the SnugRide from Graco so I'm trying to figure out if I should just sell the travel system and get a new one?  It didn't have any recalls that I know of and was manufactured in 2007 so it won't be expired I don't think.  I looked a few months ago online and I think Graco suggested 6 years but I need to check again.  It has a manufactured date but not an experation date.  I'm due in February, so I'm thinking I will just sell it or Cragislist it - or try to sell on my Facebook maybe but anyway, what would you price it at?  I have 2 bases, the infant seat, and the stroller but have no idea where to start.  Thanks!

Oh, and since I think I've talked myself into selling it I will probably buy a Chico seat - but want the new KeyFit snap frame that is supposed to come out in a few months - anyone have any reviews for it?

  • SafeSeat IS the Graco Snugride 32/35.  They just changed the name.  Graco seats are good for 6 years from manufacture date.  I don't see why you need to sell it when it is perfectly fine.  Instead, I would sell the stroller and get a snap and go frame.

  • 2007 manufacture date and 6 year expiration would put it at the time frame depending on the month it was manufactured.  I need to pull it out of storage again.  If I'm going to sell any of it I will sell all of it.  I just meant if I sell it I won't buy a new travel system - instead I will buy the infant seat and the snap and go frame.  I love the stroller, it was awesome, but the manufacture and expiration date has me concerned.

Also, not many people will buy a used or older car seat. Strollers... sure. Not car seats. Used car seats are against every recommendation in print. I don't think you'll have much luck trying to sell it.

Cribs and car seats are the two things that you're supposed to buy new. Everything else can be used.

Yea I wondered about that.  But the base can be reused easily I would hope because it has never been wrecked and the base alone I think was 49 each?  I can't remember, but I was going to donate it if nothing else, and just take the donation as a tax write-off which we might still do.  That, or I figured if anyone was pregnant and due soon, they could use it and it wouldn't be expired yet.

  • Many places won't take used car seats as donations, either due to liability concerns.  I volunteered at a domestic violence shelter and we weren't able to accept used car seats due to safety and liability concerns.

  • It sounds like you want to sell it, but I would just use it.  We got our car seat newq in the fall of 2006.  It has an expiration date stamped on it of December 2011.  We figure we will use it for the 3 months with this baby before expiration then switch over to our convertible seat that has more time left on it. This saves us the money of buying new (even if we could sell our current infant seat, it wouldn't cover the cost of the new).

In terms of donating and taking the tax write off...our goodwill no longer accepts anything that is subject to CPSC recalls like strollers, cribs and car seats.  Some specialty programs might take it, but it might not be as easy as dropping it off at your usual donation site.

Not saying that you're not trustworthy, but your word is as good as mud in this type of situation. You can tell someone that the seat/base has never been in an accident, but there's no guarantee on that. You could easily lie... and people do.

The base is just as important as the actual seat for protecting a child in an accident. So even the base should be new.

The thrift stores in my area  (we have Goodwill, Salvation Army, Community Aid, and two others... I can't remember their names) don't take baby items that are subject to recall. They basically take clothes, bathtubs and bottles (without the nipples). The cost of removing the recalled/expired/broken/questionable items just got to be too much, so now they are forced to refuse any of it.

The consignment shops won't even help you sell it. Most baby gear is basically disposable now. Buy it, use it, trash it (or recycle it if you can... in my township, you can remove the non-recycleable components and they'll take the recycleable parts).

  • Personally I would not sell or buy a used car seat.  I would either keep the one you have, buy the snap and go and sell the stroller, or BRU has a trade in event where you can bring in your old car seat and get a discount on a new one.  Not sure when this event is, I've been keeping my eyes open.

  • I also like the idea of using the infant seat (Graco you already have) until the expiration date.  The seat is good until 2013.

Also.  I wouldn't try and sell it either.  People are not supposed to buy used car seats so why would you try and sell it?  Makes no sense to me.

  • Thanks for the replies - I wonder if some stores are more strict than others because the one downtown has strollers and carseats all the time and so does one of the big ones in San Antonio.  I've never been in there, but they have them on display outside as well.  I agree - this might be just not worth it.  I guess I could donate or try to sell the stroller and toss the rest.  I know we purchased it in Dec. 2007, but I can't remember when it was manufactured and H won't be home until late to pull it down from the attic so I will have to check it out then.  Thanks again though, I appreciate the replies.

Do you have a link to this snap frame?  I am buying a Chicco seat and unsure about which stroller.   Is Chicco coming out with other new options too?
