Stella's 15 month check up is next week and I'm wondering if the Dr. will be asking about her verbal vocabulary. She has a lot of words that she can say but sometimes it's just repeating them after me or DH. She also knows a lot of animal sounds and I don't know if those count as words or not. I'd like to have a loose number to tell the Dr. if he asks. What counts as a word?

I wouldn't be too worried about it. It sounds like she is verbalizing a lot and if she knows animal sounds is obviously understanding and learning how to form words (although they aren't technically words). She will probably have a language explosion soon. I remember Reed could say all of his animal sounds and then all of a sudden he was speaking sentences.
I was just thinking about this a little bit because Pierce's appt will be coming up in about a month and he really doesn't say too much, but will say a new word here and there but only 1-2 times and then I won't hear it again. Then I question myself as to whether he really did say the word or I was just imagining it. A few days ago he came over to me and said "poop" while he was pooping, but hasn't said it again since even when I ask him "do you have to poop" etc. So, do you consider them having words if they only say it a few times seemingly out of the blue?
My dr had us count the animal noises. But that might have been bc she was using them as the animal's name? Like instead of saying cow and sheep, she calls them moo and baa.
