Baby Eczema - Any advice?

I'm pretty sure DS has this.  He has a red scaley rash on his cheeks (not constantly - it has only flared up twice) and bumps on his chest and elbows.  I don't know if it is wrth going to the pedi (I was just there twice last week) because I'm not sure that there it anything they can do.

Any advice?

Re: Baby Eczema - Any advice?

  • We use the CA Baby Calendula cream on her feet when she gets this. It works quite well. I did call the pedi, but they said as long as she doesn't seem bothered by it and it isn't happening on her private parts, they don't need to see her and to just treat it as we were.

Because it's on his face, I might call before using anything. Her doc doesn't want me using anything on her face but warm water at this point, so you might want to run it by them.

  • My LO has it too.  Pedi said to use Cetaphil(sp?) during her bath instead of J&J or the like, and then use Aquaphor healing ointment instead of lotion.  Aquaphor is made by Eucerin and they also have a gentle baby wash, which we use instead of Cetaphil (Expensive!!!).

We have had less flare-ups since using the Aquaphor.  The ointment can be a little messy, but her skin is so dry during a flare up that it takes no time at all to soak right in.  I usually apply it then play with her a few mintues while she's on the changing table before re-dressing her to give it a chance to soak in.  Hope this helps-it has worked for us!

This exactly!  I have not used the Aquafor baby wash (i'll try it now) but even as an adult I use both products.

  • it is itchy, if you can't control it with the suggestions, go to the pedi

we use a mild soap, Dove Sensitive Skin body wash, and a gentle lotion after baths, Cera Ve. DS (3 years) has prescription cream we put on it.

  • Agree with all of these suggestions, and if you're still having problems, try switching detergents. As soon as I stopped using Dreft, my son's cleared up really fast.

  • Pretty much a repeat of what has been said:  Switch detergents, try some really thick lotions.  We used Aveno, which helped quite a bit.  My pedi also said using a 1% hydrocortisone cream would be fine, but my DD never had it on her face.
  • All of the above pretty much. At the pedi yesterday, he said try a moisturizing soap like Dove, Eucerin and he gave me a script for a steroid cream. I'm going to wait to use the steroid cream though. DD has it on her face and he said it's fine to use everything on her face, just not as frequently as the rest of her body though. We use ALL free and clear detergent.

  • My first DS still suffers from an occasional eczema flareup, but as a baby it was awful! With the bad flare-ups where it was everywhere, we used a special ointment pediatrician prescribed along with vaseline. For occasional patches pedi told me to use hydrocortisone. Then also whenever we bathed him or anything we put on him was washed with fragrance free soap/detergent. Anything with fragrance in it will most likely irritate LO's skin. I know anytime I used anything with fragrance in it on DS it would cause him to break out horribly.  We used the Aveeno Eczema lotion on a daily basis to keep his skin moisturized! That has worked really well for DS.

As we were dealing with all of this, we found out after trying almost every formula out there, he is lactose intolerant, so his formula was causing the bad flare-ups as he was reacting to the dairy. That was tricky, because he isn't allergic to dairy, just the lactose sensitivity. He ended up on Similac Sensitive though the Eczema still flared up here and there. Today as a  2 year old he will break out if he drinks milk or has a lot of food with dairy in it. You might check into possible allergies as a cause. Good luck.

  • My 10 month old started out with the red and scaly patches behind her knees and the creases of her elbows and a couple other little patches about 2 months ago.  As a first time Mom, I freaked out a little bit but, after a visit to the Pediatrician....Eczema!  The doctor gave me a RX for a Hydrocortizone cream that really helps and she said that it's not a big deal.  Apparently, lots of babies get this during the dryer months of the year.  Keeping it moisturized and unrestricted seems to help the most.  But, a call to the doctors office would not hurt.  Good luck!
  • A lot of good suggestions.  We took all fragrances out (even some Vasoline has it so I had to check everything) of washes, detergent (Dreft has fragrance, so we switched to All Free and Clear, so much cheaper than baby detergent too!).  I also use Aveeno Eczema Baby lotion every few hours during the day. I had to take her to the Dr and eventually to a dermatologist.  They started by having us use hydrocortizone and they eventually prescribed low-dose steroid creams to be used when it flares.  It'll also flare when they're sick, so if it gets bad, maybe there's something else going on?  Good luck, I hope it heals quickly!

  • When my son was diagnosed I ditched the J&J

Aveeno baby wash, Dove for sensitive skin, Eucrin (Aquaphor) lotion, Cetaphil (sp) are all fantastic at combating Eczema

Since I switched (2 years ago) no flare ups whatsoever
  • My son has eczema as well. It was really bad, all over his body, I took him to 3 different dermatologists, an allergist, and several times to the pedi. What worked was Cetaphil lotion, must moisturize religiously! Aquaphor or Cetaphil soap when bathing, and a little bit of Cortizone on the areas of his body that were swollen and red. He is much better now! He only has a little patch on his elbow, and cheek, and some on his neck. Good luck! It will get better! My son would wake up in the middle of the night crying because he was itching so much. Also, do not bathe him for long periods of a time and only luke warm water.
  • be sure to maintain a dust/dirt free zone, another possible trigger. I'm an advocate of cetaphil (wash AND cream). It works & worth the price! Dye & scent fre detergent switch also helps and avoiding baby colognes...they smell delicious, but soft baby skin trumps it! My son had it instantly after birth, is a toddler now & slight patches flare up mostly on elbows, particularly in summer.. But remember to apply like they said above, religiously! That's the trick to smooth skin & minimizing flareups. :)  good luck
  • My son was diagnosed with eczema around 3 months of age.  My pediatrician suggested vani cream.  You dont need a rx, but cvs keeps it behind the counter.  My dermatologist also told me that they have the full line of products-washes, etc... I tried aveeno, and it worked ok, but nothing has worked like this cream.  Good luck to you.
  • We initially discovered Huxley had eczema after starting him on formula (supplementing to get his weight up) he had a TERRIBLE flair up of red almost sore looking bumps. The Pediatrician was all too calm about it and I KNEW the formula was the culprit so I started doing everything possible to boost my supply & take him off.

Without telling the Pediatrician I stopped formula & wouldn't you know. CLEAR SKIN.

We discovered he had an allergy to dairy proteins.

Hux still has a really dry back & does get some Hypo-allergenic formula from time-time so we use Mustela Milk Bath Oil & Weleda Calendua Oil afterwards.

    We LOVE these products.
