High-Risk Pregnancy

Hernia while Pregnant = High Risk Pregnancy?

Has anyone had - or known of a friend who had a hernia while pregnant?

I know there are several different types, and it can make a big difference. I have an Inguinal hernia - groin area - in the crease of my thigh. I have to get a surgical evaluation today because it has been continually getting worse as I've continued to gain weight with my pregnancy. I'm athletic, and usually very active, so I've only gained 10 pounds, but its definitely made a difference.

I just wanted to know if they were considered High risk - had any complications - or had to go on any sort of bed rest because of the hernia.

Thanks guys - I'm just a little concerned about having a hernia, and potentially having to go under the knife.

Re: Hernia while Pregnant = High Risk Pregnancy?

  • I have an umbilical hernia that is getting worse and worse this time around.  I'm being more closely monitored, but because I had a preemie the first time, not the hernia, though they check on it every time I go in for a regular appt.  I haven't been given any specifics yet (28 weeks), but am definitely taking it much easier and trying not to pick up my toddler as much as possible since the more I do, the more it hurts.  Hoping no surgery is needed for you.

  • I have two inscisional hernias, one above my belly button and also one in my belly button, Dr said that we just need to keep an eye on it and then refer me to a General surgeon after delivery.  Good Luck

  • Today was a complete whirlwind - I went in fully expecting them to say that having any surgery right now at 24 weeks would be way too risky. Turns out I was wrong. Since my hernia has been gradually getting larger, the Dr. said it would be best to do surgery under a timed and controlled environment, and eliminate the threat of a strangulated hernia, instead of letting it go and potentially having to have an emergency surgery that we wouldn't be prepared for. AND in the case that it would become an emergency, they would most likely take the baby out right away by C section because I would be extremely sick from having a strangulated bowel.

While not exactly what I was hoping for, I'm sure baby and I will come through just fine. I'm beyond terrified of having to have surgery (first time for me) but I'm even more worried about my baby during the procedure. Thankfully my little boy will have his own set of labor and delivery nurses and doctors monitoring him before, during, and after.

  • Best of luck to you!
  • I know this post is older, but I wanted to respond to others who are experiencing inguinal hernias during pregnancy.  I wore the Babybellyband products and it made a world of difference.  I could actually walk and do my normal daily things without holding my hernia in.  You have to get the Babybelly abdominal band with add-on groin bands which provide compression support to the hernia area holding it in.  This really worked and I did not need surgery post pregnancy with my 2nd child and am using it now with my 3rd once again.
