1 month maternity leave

so today i asked my boss about maternity leave. he said i will only get one month off. Kinda bummed and upset about it because most companies I have worked for before get anywhere from 3 to 6 months off paid. Since I work for a small company that only employs 6 people including the 2 owners. FMLA does not apply to our company. Just wondering what you are getting and what you are planning to do after you have baby. How many months you plan to be off and when you anticpate going back to work. I think it riduclous that they are going to give me only 1 month. The baby will only be 4 weeks when I come back. My boss' wife just has a baby so I thought he would be more understanding.

Re: 1 month maternity leave

  • With our first, I was a college student and worked part time and went back two weeks after she was born  With our second, I had a week of vacation and took three more unpaid.  With #3, my FMLA covered 8 weeks (I have c/s) at 70%.  I will have the same benefits with #4.

It is actually more the norm for moms to get unpaid leave or have shorter leaves.  I consider my maternity leave to be quite a benefit considering what the situation was the first two times.

  • I would do some research in what is legal for your state.  I would think it would be 6-8 wks depending on delivery.  Most Dr. won't release you back to work until then and there is the other side, childcare centers and home daycares cannot take a baby under 6wks of age.

  • Our company gives us 6 weeks off, and if I have accrued PTO at that point, I can apply that toward maternity leave as well. Right now I'm projected to have accrued 3 weeks PTO by the end of the year (and I can only roll over 2 weeks into 2012) so I plan on using all the PTO I have at that time in conjunction with the 6 weeks. So I'll probably take 8-9 weeks off.

  • I'm self-employed, so I'll start working again pretty quickly - I just can't afford to have a long leave since I'm paying for it myself.I won't be full-time immediately, but I expect to be spending time at the computer within a week or two.

Is the one month paid? If so, for a company that's under no legal obligation to offer you leave let alone hold your job for you if you take time off, it seems pretty generous. The office has six people - I doubt they could go several months without someone to do your job (and probably can't pay both you and someone else like a temp to do it for you, either).

  • I'm a public school teacher and I don't get ANY time off paid.

I have to use my vacation time if I want to get paid.  We do use FMLA, so I can take 12 weeks but I won't get any pay.  I've been with the same school district for 6 years and have been saving my state and local days for this reason.  I will be paid for all of my leave since I've saved up time.

  • I don't get any paid Maternity leave off. I'll be using my vacaton/pesonal time as well. I still plan on being out for 6 weeks. (I'm actually hoping that it works out that I'll be able to be a SAHM)
  • I have 2 weeks vacation and 2 weeks sick time banked. After that, I have 2 weeks of full pay and up to 4 weeks at half pay from short term disability if I want it. I will take the 2 weeks fully paid and then maybe 1-2 weeks at half pay. So 7-8 weeks off.

  • I work for a small company too, I haven't specifically asked, but I am planning on taking 12 weeks off. I'm not covered under FMLA but if my employer chooses to get rid of me so be it. I took 6 weeks off with DD and this time I'd like to have more time at home. I am open to working part time from home during those 12 weeks I just need to talk to my employers about it. We only have 2 people in the office, but I'm confident the other person will be able to do most of the work since my position was just added 18 months ago and it is also our slow season.

  • I work for the Gov and they don't provide any maternity leave.  I can use my personal sick/annual and FMLA though.  I plan on taking off untill 1 Feb pending Wyatt's birthday.  If he comes right around when he is due that is the plan, it puts me at about 8 weeks off and has me returning on a Wed, which I think will be easier than a Monday.

But either way I plan on taking anywhere from 6-8 weeks.  It helps that Christmas and New Years are all within that time frame.  Gives me a few extra days to play with.

  • This probably won't be of any help to you, but here in Canada we get 1 year maternity leave. It is paid at 55% of your regular earnings and you have to have 600 hours worked before you are eligible.

I wanted to tell all you moms that live in the US that I don't know how you do it (going back to work with such a little baby at home)! I commend you on that! I can't imagine, you are very strong women to be able to do that! Women definately don't get enough credit for everything we do!!

  • I will only get what sick/vacation time I have but I will be using FMLA and taking 12 weeks off no matter what.  With my DS I ended up getting really sick and going to the hospital several times so I got catistrophic illness pay which covered all but 30 days of my leave.  Don't get me wrong I would hate to get sick again but it was nice to have paid time off.

I get 12 weeks off total due to FMLA. STD pays me 2/3 of my salary for 6-8 weeks (depending on delivery) of that time. After STD is up I can use any accrued time-off or I can take the remainder un-paid. I will probably do a little of both.

  • We're a small company, but I can still take 12 weeks off.  It is entirely unpaid.  If I had any of my maternity leave paid, I'd feel very lucky.

  • I also work for the gov't (local) and we have no paid maternity leave. We can use sick/vacation time until that runs out and then we are eligible for STD.

I'm in the same boat, except I'll just be starting my 3rd year where I am, so I will only have 36 sick days I can apply to the FMLA to get paid.  I'll have 3 personal days on top of that, but I definitely don't want to use them all, just in case I need days to take baby to the dr or in case I get sick after I return.  If I deliver around when I'm due (which luckily falls over Christmas break), I should be able to take 6 weeks off (which will be more like 8 because of 2 school vacations) and still have a few days just in case.

  • I work for a very small company and honestly I have yet to breech the subject with them. I am not "entitled" to any time off, never mind paid leave. Paid leave is pretty rare in the states (sadly). If you feel like it's not a lot of time and you need more, maybe try negotiating with your boss? If it's not essential for you to be in the office physically you could propose a day (or 2 1/2 days) to work remotely from home, or you could work 4 10-hour days....or back down to 75% time.

Try being creative, and as long as you can do your job to the fullest and maintain your level of work, maybe your boss will be willing to flex a little.

  • I'll get off as much time as the doctor deems necessary (6w for regular delivery 8w with complications). All I'm guaranteed is to have my job back when I get back. I will not be getting any pay while out.

Why don't you look into short term disability insurance?

My work only give 6 weeks maternity, but then I can take 6 addition weeks through disability.

  • In Turkey by law we get 16 weeks (18 for multiples) which starts up to 8 weeks before the due date. I'll start mine 2 weeks before the due date. Plus we get "milk" leave which is 1.5 hours a day for the first year, which compresses to about 20 or so days. This is all paid. The last 2 months of the school year I will take unpaid leave.

I feel a lot of respect for you mommas who will be going back to work so quickly. I remember when my sister had her first, she had to go back after 8 weeks, and she cried for weeks every time she had to drop my niece off. It was so hard for her.

  • I get 6 weeks short-term disability (or 8 if c/s) and then i am eligible for up to 16 weeks of FMLA in a year (unpaid).  I plan to take it ALL just as I did with my son.  I did not go back to work until he was 5 months old and it was awesome. See what you can get off unpaid.  I do not think 4 weeks is sufficient for a new mom. I didn't have breastfeeding down for a couple of months so there is no way I would have been as successful going back so soon.  Ask more questions and take the maximum you can take.  You will not want to go back so soon once that baby is in your arms.  Good luck!

  • I can take up to 12 weeks in accordance with FMLA, but in order to take that time paid I have to use my sick and vacation time.  I have about 9 weeks saved up right now, and will accrue a few more weeks by the time the baby comes, but will probably about 8 weeks off, plus the week of paid leave we get at Christmas.  I'm thinking I'll probably start back the first week in March.

  • I am taking 6 weeks maternity leave.  I will be using my PTO which only covers me for the first 3 weeks.

  • I think I have 12 weeks under FMLA (unpaid), however I haven't discussed this with HR yet. I plan to take the max amount possible.

  • Depending on if I go vaginally, I get 6 weeks...C-section 8 weeks under FMLA. But technically on 5 weeks or 7 weeks since the first week I have to use my PTO before short term disability kicks in.

  • I'm self employed so unfortunately as soon as my body is physically ready to get back to work (and I do have a physical job so my body really has to be ready) I will be going back. I imagine it will be at least 4 weeks but who knows. I am lucky enough that I can take the baby with me to the office. I pray that plan works out because I just can't bring myself to put my 4-6 week old in daycare :/
