Baby Names

Ella popularity?

I am wondering your opinion on how popular Ella is.  I know Isabella is trendy but not sure how many people are using Bella or Ella as nn like we would be using Ella as a nn.  As well as Ella itself being trendy.  I personally only know one baby whose name is Ella.

Our baby's name would be Elizabeth Kathleen (named after her 2 great grandmothers) but we would call her Ella Kate.  Any thoughts on if this is too popular or how many Ellas you know would be appreciated  Thanks.

Re: Ella popularity?

  • I love how classic Elizabeth is:) I know a whopping six Ella's under 5 years old. One is Eleanor but only goes by Ella and one is Gabriella but only goes by Ella. Also, we know one acquaintance who is naming their baby Ella, due in August. The thing with Ella is that it's become very popular of a name on it's own and then you toss in all the names that have Ella as a nn on top of that. Ella Kate is cute, but I'd never associate it with something as classic as Elizabeth Kathleen.

  • Ella is a pretty name, but way too popular for me!  Elizabeth Kathleen is beautiful though!!!  Ella Kate is pretty, if you call her both names.

Elizabeth Kathleen is lovely. Ella and Kate are absurdly popular. I've stopped counting the number of Ellas and Kates I've met. I'd stick with the name but go with a different nickname like Lizzie or Liza.
  • Personally I don't know anyone named Ella. I think it's really cute.

  • It's SO popular...I know several Ella's under the age of 5!
  • Yes we would be calling her Ella Kate.  Do you think that makes a difference in the popularity since it is more than just Ella?  Any other suggestions to go with Kate deriving from Elizabeth?

  • I know a old, mean & nasty lady name Ella.. for this reason.. I do not like the name what so ever and I think its ugly..
  • I really like that name! I know it is popular right now...but I still really love it.

  • I know 1 Ella and she is 1.  I think it is cute, but I wouldn't personally use it as a nickname for Elizabeth.  I love the name Elizabeth and would probably use the nn Lizzie if I used a nickname at all.
  • Like pps had mentioned, between all of the fn's and nn's, Ella is very popular. What about Eliza Kate or Liza Kate?
  • I am so, so over Ella.  I don't know a lot of kids, but I see it a lot on The Bump and on Facebook.  I think there are better nicknames for Elizabeth anyway (IMO, obviously), like Eliza, Liza, Libby, and Betsy.  And actually, I like Kathleen a lot as a fn.

  • All of the Ellas I know go by a double name...Ella Grace, Ella Ruth, Ella Kate, and Ella Mae.  This is just in my mom's group.  So over Ella, sorry!

Well, I love you fn/mn combo Elizabeth Kathleen as it is my #1 for our baby girl (just can't get DH on board with it). Her nn would be Ellie or Ellie Kate. But I do agree with all the pps that Ella/Ellie is very popular - but I still love it!

  • I love the name Elizabeth, but I can't seem to wrap my head around Ella as short for Elizabeth. People are going to shorten her name however they want.

For example my name is Jennifer, my parents called me Jenny (which I also prefer), my sisters call me Jenna and almost everyone else calls me Jen (which I don't like but have learned to live with.

You can call her Ella all you want but once she's out in the world people will probably call her Liz or Beth, which are also nice nick names in my opinion.

I guess I'm just of the opinion that a nick name can't be forced. JMO

  • Ella may not be as popular as Bella, but as far as I can tell, it's close.  I know 3 Ellas and 3 Ella-Kates.

  • My daughters name is Ella and although I know it's supposed to be really popular I rarely hear it. I'm sure once she goes to school maybe there will be more but I don't care. I knew well before I'd even met my husband that if I ever had a girl her name would be Ella so it was never an issue when it started to become more popular. I say if you like it than use it :)
