Success after IF

Anyone have a deep freezer?

Talk to me :). I want to get one in the 3-5 cubic feet range. I'm runnin out of room for frozen BM and we love to stock up on meat when on sale but have to limit ourselves due to lack of space in our side by side. Do you find it's worth it? Any brand recommendations?

Re: Anyone have a deep freezer?

  • We just got a deep freezer a few months before DD was born so we'd have room for more food and frozen BM compared to side by side, and it has totally been worth it!  It's nice to be able to stock up on frozen food when it's on sale and have a place to put it.  BM also stays good longer in a deep freezer than in an attached one.  We went with a 14.8 cu ft GE chest freezer from Home Depot and so far it's been great!

  • We have an upright freezer.  I love it, because I ran out of room in our regular freezer, so it was great for BM storage.  I use it now when I buy things on sale at the grocery store.

    Get one! You'll love it!!

  • I LOOOOVE my freezer!

I double and triple batch pretty much every time I cook and it saves me on needing to cook soooo much!

    Wish I'd gotten it sooner.

My #1 piece of advice:  Do NOT get a chest style.  Get an upright.  Things get lost in a chest freezer.

#2 piece of advice:  Get a wipe off board and put an inventory on the front of the freezer.  When you take something out - remove it from the list.  When you put something in - add it including the date.  My list is broken down by "staples" (1 lb ground turkey) and then "chicken" "beef" "veggie" "other" dishes so I can see what we've got meal-wise at a glance.

#3 piece of advice:  Invest in a food saver.  I got ours at Costco and it's more than paid for itself.  I vacuum seal meats on sale and double or tripled meals.  I have a piece of cardboard that I leave in there to use to let everything freeze flat so it all stacks nicely.

#4 piece of advice:  loaves of bread that have been frozen last longer once thawed.  It's nice to never run out of bread because we've always got a loaf in the freezer.

#5 piece of advice:  Check Craigslist.  We found ours for a STEAL.  Brand new ones were expensive and I'm cheap.

Yes... I'm a dork who loves her freezer because she's lazy and doesn't like to cook every night.

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • I second the recommendation to get an upright freezer.  I think things tend to get foresaken at the bottom of chest freezers.

Additonally, get one that self-defrosts because who wants to have to defrost a freezer and find somewhere else to stash everything while it defrosts?

When I got mine I just went to Sears and found the cheapest upright yet self-defrosting one and I have loved having it.  Oh, and I do keep a list of everything that is in the freezer (which is in the basement) on the door to my "real" freezer that is in the kitchen.  That helps me to remember to use what's down there.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • do it! =) and i'd recommend getting a big one. ours is huge--i think maybe 18 cubic feet, and it's great. we use it the way you plan to, breastmilk and meat. no brand recommendations, i think you'll be fine if you just read reviews. i would encourage you to get one that can get as cold as possible--the colder it is, the longer your milk will last.

  • Aly, we initially got a 5 cubic foot one for breastmilk and it was full in less than a month. We now have a 20cu ft in our dining room. It's not ideal, but there's almost 5 months of breastmilk in it and when we don't need it forthat anymore, it will be for meat. We got it on sale at sears.
