Care package ideas for injured mom?

A friend of mine recently suffered a spinal injury and had emergency surgery. She's been in rehab, slowly regaining feeling in her lower body. She's going home Monday, even though she's still partly numb. We don't live right near each other, but I want to do something to help her out/cheer her up. What would you want/need in this situation? I thought of baked goods/reading material to cheer her up a bit. But on a practical side, should I include a gift card for a place that delivers food or something like that? What else am I not thinking of that I could get in the mail to her? I feel at a total loss. She's a SAHM to 3 girls, 5 years to 9 months, so she's really going to have her work cut out for her.

  • I'd definitely help with food or cleaning.  You could get her a gift card for a restaurant or catering place that she could get a few meals from, that would be great.  Or, maybe $ towards Merry Maids or something if she doesn't have a cleaning woman.  Either would be practical and helpful and would probably mean a lot.  If you don't want to spend too much I'd consider chipping in with some people.

  • I'm not sure if she'll have time to read them but definitely People and Us or some other "light" reading.  A gift card to Peapod might be helpful (if there is one in her area).  Or even one of those places where you can prepare meals and then take them home and bake them.  We have one near us called Entree Kitchen - if you Google it, you can get an idea of what I'm talking about.  That way it's an entire meal she doesn't have to worry about.

I can't imagine how difficult this will be for her!

This. my mom has muliple spinal surgeries and the one thing that made her the craziest was not being able to clean....in fact in a previous surgery she was trying to clean up and and injured herself further. I bought her a months worth of cleaning, but you can buy a one time cleaning or GC.

The delivery food idea is great...along with the reading materials, game books and maybe movies or giftcard for movies...giftcard to walgreens or CVS to buy health supplies she needs...

  • I am a former SCI nurse, and many times I have organized gift packages for families going home after a difficult situation like this.

Definately gift cards to restaurants, especially ones that will deliver. Also, grocery store gift cards so that her DH (or another family member) can go grocery shopping. Gas gift cards, because if it's a severe injury, she is going to be going back and forth to doctor and physical therapy appointments. Gift certificates for a cleaning service, if only once a week or every couple weeks. Then also things to keep her LOs busy (because recovering from an SCI she will have a difficult time playing and taking care of them), maybe to places like The Little Gym or an activity center that her DH or someone else can take them to to play.

I believe you said she is a SAHM? It is going to be very hard in the beginning for her NOT to be able to get up and go and do things that she's use to doing (cleaning, shopping, bathing the kids, etc) so ANYTHING that would take the stress off her would be a big help.

Hope this helps! Prayers for a speedy recovery for your friend.
