Are you using sunscreen/block on LO?

We have a family vacation coming up in a couple of weeks and H and I are planning to get the kids to the beach and/or lake a couple of times.

We do have a tent thing we plan to keep DS under, but I am concerned about reflective sunlight and also when I take him in the water.

I know sunscreen or sunblock is preferable to a burn, but I also know you're not "supposed" to use it on babies under 6 months.

So, what are you doing?

Re: Are you using sunscreen/block on LO?

  • My Pedi gave me the OK to use sunscreen/block at her four month apt. She said she didn't want us to think it was okay to keep her in the sun all day, but we could use sun products on her. DD is so fair and nothing covers everything. So whenever we go out we use sunscreen and shade her.

  • I thought I read that the APA changed their views on this?  Yes, we use Aveeno 55SPF....pedi recommened putting a dab on the shoulder (for example) about 24 hours prior to first use to make sure there is no reaction.

  • You are supposed to keep them out of the sun as much as possible, but if they are going to be exposed, you should put sunblock on (physical block) rather than sunscreen (chemical block).  You have to look at the ingredients on the bottle because they interchange the terms all the time. you want something with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide for kids under 6 mos (or those with sensitive skin).

  • When I am not able to keep her in the shade I use Water Babies, and have since she was 3 months.

  • I also asked our pedi at the 4 month check up.  she said to use sunblock of at least spf 30 and that it didnt have to be a "babies" version.

  • My pediatrician suggested to use it if we would be out in the sun for a longer period of time.  But she did suggest two specific brands... California Baby or Neutrogena.  Something about the ingredients in these two she liked.  So we have been using Neutrogena Pure & Free Baby and Liam does really well with it.

  • My pedi says not to use it until 6 months - my DD has ridiculously sensitive skin as it is, and we're worried about a reaction - but when we start, we'll use Neutrogena Pure and Free Baby (I've already purchased it).

For now, DD just stays inside most of the time, and if we're out and about, she's under a shade and wearing a big hat. I don't do well in the sun anyway, due to my very fair skin, so we just sit on a shady porch if we're outside.

I went to the beach, and in addition to keeping her in the tent, she wore a Halo bodysuit which provide SPF 30 protection. It was really cool temperature wise even though it was long sleeved.

We mostly just keep her covered and in the shade.

  • My doc said their skin is so sensitive that at 1 month we could start using it. I use Aveeno.
