For moms who already have 2+ LOs

When this baby comes, DS will be 3 months shy of his 3rd birthday. We are probably done having kids after this one. Do you think we need a double stroller? I'm leaning towards not getting one since it seems like DS will want to walk most of the time by then anyway. Thoughts?

Re: For moms who already have 2+ LOs

  • I had one and only used it a handful of times . My boys are 3 years apart and you are right, your older one will likely want to walk everywhere. The double stroller was usually more work than it was worth. If they had been closer in age, I think it would have been much more of a necessity.

If you have a carrier I would say you could skip the double stroller. That way you can pop the baby in the carrier of the 3 yr old gets tired! They do want to walk everywhere but their little legs get tired too. My boys will be just shy of 3&4 when these two get here but I do not plan on getting a quad stroller. (Lord help me!)

That's what I was thinking - that I'll just invest in a really good carrier for baby instead. Then if DS wants to be in the stroller (maybe for the first 6 months or whatever), I can wear baby. I figure I'll use a carrier a lot more with this one than I did with my first anyway.

  • Hmmm. I definitely used my double through DS's 3rd year but I run with them. I'm selling mine this time with LOs 4 and 6 years old.
  • We will have one since our oldest will be 2 and our middle will be 1 when new babe comes, but I really just use it for running, otherwise we babywear. One of my friends just got rid of her stroller because her youngest was three and she regretted it at the zoo. I guess it depends when you are using your stroller and if it's on longer walks where the three year old can't complete the whole thing yet.
  • We will have a double stroller. Thinking the city select one. Since we will have a 1 1/2 yr old and newborn.

  • DD will barely be 2 when the new baby gets here, and I'm a runner, so I will definitely get use out of a double jogger. If I didn't run I doubt I would get a double. I will baby wear a fair amount just like I did with my first.
  • If you get one, consider looking at a consignment shop for one that way you are not spending a lot. IF you go out a lot where a lot of walking is involved then it is good to consider one. There are different styles. I'm considering the type the has a sit and stand part. I like the idea that a PP said about a baby carrier. I have heard of people using a single stroller and when the older child was tired they went in the stroller and the mom baby wore the baby (baby carrier).
  • @kattyleigh and @acciobaby123 -- Exactly, and I'm not a runner. So I feel like the carrier will be plenty with the stroller we have.

@Duffgurl and @texasmama2014 -- Right, and if my son were younger, I'd definitely get one. But he'll be almost three. He's 26 months now and we hardly use the stroller anymore.

  • We have a sit and stand double stroller which I love. DD just turned 3 this month and my other DD just turned one. It's really convenient for my 3 year old to get on if she's tired of walking or jump off when she's ready. I will keep it when I have our third and just baby wear him or her.

  • Seconding what @Kjohnson1426 said, we have a double stroller that converts to a sit and stand, and we still use it with our 4 & 1-year-old quite a bit (at the zoo, mall, theme parks, etc.) If we had a 'normal' double stroller we would have abandoned it long ago - the sit and stand is much better for the bigger sibs!

  • I would highly recommend a sit and stand stroller. They are far less bulky and weigh less than doubles. Basically, it has a small seat for your older child giving them the option to walk or ride.

It's great for stuff like the zoo and traveling. Hope that helps.

Thanks for that suggestion -- I had thought about a Sit'n'Stand but wasn't sure. I'm going to start looking for a used one, I think. Thank you for your input!

  • No need for a true double at that age unless you are running.  If the oldest wants to ride, we let her and we will carry the little one (or put him in the ergo or whatever).

  • DS will be 2 when the LO is born and he loves sitting in the stroller when we go out to busy places. You can tell it's his safe zone. So yeah, I think we are going to look into getting a double.
