1st Trimester

What can I drink besides water?

I just found out I was pregnant a few days ago (YAY!), and now I'm trying to navigate all the "don'ts" of eating and drinking while pregnant. I used to be a really big fan of diet sodas, but even the ones that are caffeine free usually have aspartame in them, and my sister said I'm not supposed to have that. So, right now I picked out a regular sprite (no caffeine but tons of sugar and calories -- boo) Any suggestions?

Re: What can I drink besides water?

  • Gatorade or sparkling water should be lower in calories, and I don't think they have any of the fake sugars.

  • Anything except alcohol.  Seriously, just make sure you don't overdue the artificial sweeteners or caffeine, but don't worry too much if you have a diet coke or two per day.

  • Definitely avoid diet sodas and try not to drink just regular sodas either because of the sugar intake.

this is what I do. Goal is to drink 64oz a day of liquid, that includes milk, soda or whatever else you drink.

I for example have a glass of milk a day, at least 32oz of water (sometimes i mix it with a little apple juice of add lemons for taste), i have one soda like sprite or gingerale and i also like to drink some orange juice in the morning. So that pretty much covers my fluid intake. So it definitely doesnt have to be all water. Gatorade is good, too but it does have sugar in it. And I for example can't have Gatorade these days as it gives me heartburn :/ Oh and you can also have a can of cafeinated soda a day too :)

  • I like to mix fruit juice with club soda.  I get the bubbles of soda with the goodness of fruit juice.

    and congrats!

This.  My doc said I can have one or two diet sodas a day (I drink one).  I also mix Crystal Light with my water.

  • My dr reccomended lemonade with sugar haha... at least one glass a day beacause my blood sugar gets low during the day which is common in pregnant women. but otherwise i drink water, orange juice, sprite or whatever else i have in the house that doesnt have caffeine...i'm not a big soda or coffee drinker so it hasnt been hard for me not to drink it...i think i have had 2 cups of coffee since i found out i was preggo,

  • I've been drinking pink lemonade mix. lol its really good. I mixed it with sprite.
  • I love club soda or sparkling mineral water with the hint of lemon or lime. I also take the peach tea single packets and only use 1/4 of the package for 16oz of water. It still has the taste, but definitely not concentrated.

  • Go buy fruit juices (like the 100% juice stuff with no added sugar) I get the little drinks like you'd put in a lunch box. Those are great when you get tired of water.

PLUS I HIGHLY recommend  oceanspray cranberry juices that are no sugar added- before and after pregnancy (after is the BEST cuz it cleans you out and make it not burn when you pee after delivery, seriously its a GODSEND) but I also like the juicy juice fruit punch. I know it prob has alot of sugar but it's better then a soda and tastes just as good (Imo) and I do believe they actually are considered a serving of fruit. Which helps when You can bear eat anything.

I started drinking the new sierra mist (supposedly it's all natural) and I actually like it! It helps with the MS, but nothing works better then plain ol' ginger ale.

That's a pretty good schedule of drinks!

This. I drank a lot of water w/ lemon, milk, & teas (hot or iced) w/ my first pregnancy, but those beverages are what I normally drink.  Just lay off the booze! :)

  • I refill my bottle of water constantly because I'm so thirsty I'd make myself sick on sugared sodas. I'll have ice tea if we're eating out and either put a single packet of splenda in or drink it unsweet.

But I do like the sparkling water with lemon or grapefruit to mix it up at lunch and an Izze soda with dinner- it's just fruit juice and sparkling water. No extra sugar, no artificial color, and very tasty. I was a diet coke drinker until my IVF (we spent way too much on that cycle to possibly screw it up by drinking caffeine and aspartame). It took me weeks to stop craving it though. We get a flat of the 8.4oz Izze's from Costco and since DH is still drinking his diet cokes every day it lasts forever.

  • Ginger ale and sprite helped with my nausea in the first few weeks. Now I mostly drink water and juice once a day. I really like fruit juice slushes. I have had a little gatorade here and there. It is not so bad for me because I have never been a soda drinker, so nothing outside of the norm for me. Occasionally I have decaf iced tea.

  • Lurking....I drink mostly water, but just water would drive me crazy! I'm a big diet soda drinker and I was not going to switch to regular and intake a bunch of empty sugar calories. Remember, you need to be aware of the risk of gestational diabetes, so too much sugar is a no go.

I'm not going to advise you to drink or not drink diet drinks, but I can tell you I usually have 1 diet dr pepper a day, and 1 diet ginger ale (my favorite!!). I also drink coffee from time to time. My doc says caffeine (under 200 mg) is fine....although she recommends less than that. I usually have between 50-100 mg a day. I couldn't get past the headaches without it because Tylenol does nothing for me. My doc has approved diet sodas, she just doesn't want me drinking 6 a day! Always check with your doctor when you have a question/concern. I have found the Bump to be a great place for support and advice, but I also don't need people who are not doctors telling me what to eat or drink. That's why I say, I'm just giving you my regime. :)

In all honesty, I was more worried in the beginning that I am now.....I am active, healthy, eat right, and I don't drink or smoke. If my one downfall is a bit of diet soda from time to time, I'd say I'm doing pretty well. As with everything, moderation is key - pregnant or not. Good luck and enjoy your pregnancy!

  • My absolute favorite new drink is the lo-cal Italian Soda at World Market.  They have like 4 different flavors are sweet - so you may have to cut it with some water - and look great in a wine glass with some ice!  Seriously, the glass makes the drink.  Whatever it is you choose, just put it in a wine glass and you will start feeling relaxed (and fit in with those around you who may be drinking).
  • Lurking from the second tri board.  You can have little bits of aspartame here and there so a diet soda each day won't hurt your LO.  Also, Stevia and Truvia are perfectly safe - found in Splenda.  You can have Vitamin Water Zero which has no calories or sugar and is perfectly safe.

  • a chilled ginger drink has really helped with nausea. tea, lemon & water, mint & lime & water, smoothies with fresh fruit and lots of water/ice

your body needs lots of WATER, try to get it in that form. you only need like an additional 100 calories a day right now, drinking soda, juice, and other sugar filled drinks are just giving you empty calories that are going to add up -- unless thats what you're going for.

  • Thanks! Those were some awesome suggestions! I tried some club soda with cranberry juice and two splendas over ice, and it was freakin' DELICIOUS! Looking forward to a new world of beverages!

  • Hun, drink a soda if you want to. You could even have a cup of coffee. Just don't go overboard in anything. When I was pregnant with G, the Dr. said you get 300 extra calories a day. If you want to blow it on a Coke, it's your choice.
