Babies: 3 - 6 Months

questions about solids and watered down juice.

Okay so I have been trying to research and like everything else, there are strong positions about solids and different "professional" opinions. We do people plan to start introducing solids,  My dd is about 12 days from being 5 months, she shows all the signs of being ready to try solids, ie, she holds her head up, can sit for a long time if assisted and for a short time unassisted, she opens her mouth when she sees others eating and does not push things out of her mouth any more. DH and I feel like she is ready to start trying, not switching just adding to her normal feeding (offering her a little after she has a full bottle). Anyone else think about giving their little ones baby food?

Also very watered down juice, some say it is okay at 4 months if it is very watered down, others say it is a big no no.

As you can see I am very confused. :(

Re: questions about solids and watered down juice.

  • It sounds like your DD is ready, so give it a try!  Worst case you try again in a few weeks.  My pedi says 4 months but I plan to wait until I see the signals you mention.

Personally, I don't plan to give juice at all for a long time because it does not have a lot of nutritional value.  I would rather give fruit and water, then milk at 1.

  • The only reason we have given juice 50/50 juice to water is for constipation per pedis rec.

  • Our Pedi okay'd the occasional juice (1/3 juice to 2/3 water) especially on hot days at our 6 month appointment but I don't have any desire to give him juice now other than for constipation issues or some such.

I think listening to your Pedi is a good thing but you also just have to make the decision you think is best for your LO.

I agree. If H didn't have constipation issues for the past 2 months she wouldn't have tasted juice for a long while. I just don't think it's needed.

  • We waited until she showed readiness signs and just started this week.  We are not going to be giving juice.  We don't really don't really drink it ourselves and prefer fresh fruit due to nutrition.  If I want to give something, it will be a bit of water.

  • The general medical recommendation is to wait for 6 months, but some babies are ready earlier. Yours may be. You can always try and come back to it later.

Juice isn't advised until after a year unless it's for constipation, and even then, it needs to be watered down.

my 2.5 year old just started drinking oj. seeing as how there's not much nutrition in juice, we're waiting.

we're waiting to start solids until 6 months. it's actually not that fun and kind of a pain in the ass, so i'm not in a rush...

With my older daughter, we gave solids at 4.5 months and she took to it immediately.  She loved them and never looked back.  I decided to hold off a bit longer with DD2 who is now almost 5 months although I think we'll start soon.  She seems quite interested so I think she's ready.  I think it's fine to try it with your daughter now.  If she doesn't like it, then just stop and wait a couple of weeks.

On the juice question, I personally wouldn't give it.  Why?  There's no nutritional value to giving juice and they certainly don't need it.  If you want to start getting her used to drinking from a sippy cup, give some water.  I'm personally not a fan of any juice...it's sweet and gives kids extra empty calories and, in many cases, sugar.  I have never given my 3.5 year old juice.  She's had water since she was ~6 months old and she LOVES water.  She's tried juice at birthday parties but is not a fan (and that is a good thing, IMO).
