We bought a new washer/ dryer set just a few years ago - BUT, the washer was front loading, and we didn't learn soon enough that you must leave the door cracked when not in use to prevent mold/mildew. So, over time - you guessed it. We tried everything we could to clean it, but our clothes came out smelling worse than when they went in. G-ROSS. It had to go.
Given that it was a spur-of-the-moment decision and given that we weren't wanting to buy a set, we wanted to go lower-end (which still surprised me by how much $$ they were). Here's what we were told at the store:
Front-loader: problems we experienced. Also, harder to pack full, therefore, has the effect of having smaller capacity
Top-loader with agitator: can be rough on clothes and the agitator reduces capacity
Top-loader without agitator: some people feel that their clothes don't get as clean. This can usually be prevented by making sure to put enough in the washer.
So, we went with the front-loader, no agitator. This has been about 3 weeks now and, guess what!, the clothes stink. Part of me wonders if it's something with our water or etc., but since it's mostly the clothes that were dirtiest going in, rather than the entire load, I assume it's the washer.
We can return it under the 30 day warranty, but I don't know what else to buy! WWYD? What do you have and like? Please keep in mind that we're wanting to go cheap. One day we'll have a larger home with more space for a w/d and I'll upgrade then
Re: At my wit's end. Please help me buy a new washer.
have you tried vinegar with a load of clothes to see if that helps kill the stink? does the washer itself stink when empty? I'm wondering if the clothes just still have that funk from the old washer? sometimes it takes a while to get it out
(btw, after having my front loader not be able to spin and balance right after a year, i'd have gone with the no agitator top loader as well!)
We have a high efficiency top loader (no agitator). Had it for a year, love it.
It's this one: https://products.geappliances.com/ApplProducts/Dispatcher?REQUEST=SpecPage&Sku=GTWN5050MWS
It's a GE, one step under the Profile version. There is no difference in performance or functions/options between the two - the Profile is just 'quieter'. I'll tell you though, I have to press my ear to the one we have to know that it's on, it's super quiet. Of course, we didn't know that when we bought it but, we didn't care about noise because our laundry room is in our basement, you couldn't hear it if it was loud. But, again, it's not
We just figured it didn't matter and we liked saving $100.
We haven't had an issues at all with it. I like it a lot!
ETA: I don't have any issues with not getting clothes clean!
My first thought is that the clothes that stink have mildew/mold from the other washer. I would try to run a hot load with vinegar through the washer and see if you can clean it before buying a new one.
I left a load in our washer for a few days by mistake once (we were away)...and when I came back I had to rewash the clothes and run a vinegar load. But since then it seems to be fine. I have a very strong sense of smell.
This.
Other options include line drying the clothes so the sun can kill the bacteria and/or using a hot soak with an oxygenator like Oxyclean. But we tend to use vinegar.
This is what we have and we love it. I've also only had the problem with the smell if I've left a load in for a few days, but it's always gone once I run another load. I've also not had any problem with capacity, it holds a lot more than our old top loader with agitator.

We tried everything we could to clean it, but our clothes came out smelling worse than when they went in. G-ROSS.
This, must be my problem, too. I keep my door open, but recently clothes, towels have been funky. I hate the front loader because with five of us in our house, it never fails that I find something to add to the load and can't add it. Thanks for posting this. I think we're going to have to start looking in the near future. Our dryer just isn't drying well, either.
