Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Can a baby have outdoor allergies?

Yesterday we were outside for a couple hours.  LO is 8 wks old and was in the stroller with a blanket over it the majority of the time.  I got her out to hold her a couple of times.  By yesterday evening I could tell she was starting to get congested, and this morning the poor thing is completely stopped up.  Can a baby this young have outdoor allergies? I'm wondering if that's what caused this and if I should keep her inside because I'm pretty sure she can't have any meds at this age...

Thanks!

Kristina

  • According to my pedi not at that age. He says they need to be exposed to the allergens for a season before they can develop sensitivity to it.

my ped said that too, but I really disagree.

My DS1 was sick so much...so was I. We had runny noses, coughs, and congestion at the same time. I have a list of allergies. Whenever I felt a sore throat, the next day, DS would have a runny nose.

He's now 3.5 years and is better with Zyrtec and occasional breathing treatments. I think the pedi's say that because they can't prove an allergy, but IMO, if you're allergic to smoething you need exposure (once or a million times). If it's once, as soon as that newborn smells pollen (or whatever), they'll have a reaction.

This is technically true, BUT all the things that are allergens to us can be irritants to babies. They aren't true allergens until LO is exposed to them and either builds a sensitivity or immunity to it. So if LO doesn't get exposed to, lets say, mold until he's three, it's not an allergy, but an irritant until he has the opportunity to become immune or sensitive to it. I've heard this is where the term "snotty nosed little kid" comes from. It can be somewhat normal while kids are building immunities to have snotty noses.
