I've had the Paragard since December. It was easy to get. I had some cramping for about a week off and on, but nothing unbearable. I also had some spotting for the first month. My periods are heavier, (but getting lighter each time) and longer, (like 7 days vs. 5). Other than that, it's been great! It's really nice to not worry about anything. I had some problems with weight gain and waning libido, (that makes me sounds like an old man), so not being on hormones has been a great choice for me.
If you go for it, check out your insurance coverage so you won't have any surprises. I had to pay my co-pay and about $150 for the insertion after insurance. But I don't have to have a monthly prescription refilled, so I guess it evens out.

I'm on month 3 with the paraguard. My OB didn't recommend it, since it can make heavy periods heavier, but I insisted because I'm over hormonal stuff. First period was heavy and crampy, but the 2nd was just extra heavy- no cramps at all (which I usually always have). But when I say heavy, I'm not kidding- the first few days I'd have one section of the day where I'd go through 3 tampons+pads in an hour. But that really heavy only was one section a day, though the rest was crazy heavy too. My understanding is that it does get better. And I feel WAY better about not being on hormones anymore, plus I'm still nursing. I'd recommend it, even though it has made for heavier periods so far.
I have had Paraguard for a year now. It was a huge plus that it is non hormonal, and also that I can keep it longer than Mirena. I knew I wanted an IUD and this one was the best fit for me.
If I remember correctly, the cramping after being inserted only lasted about a day for me. My periods were always on the heavier side, so they are about the same for me now, but they did increase in length from about 5 days to 7.
