swaddling when to stop??

so we need to sleep and I am about ready to cry it out, but I do not remember how old my son was and whether or not we still swaddled. It seems cruel to swaddled and cry it out because then she get her hands, but some times her hands still freak her out. She is just over 4 months.....help

The most she has slept in a row is 6 hours and that was for about 2 weeks straight- i miss sleeping and more importantly she missed sleeping.

Re: swaddling when to stop??

  • My DD kept breaking out of her swaddle and waking herself up.  But, she's not ready to sleep unswaddled.  She can't even nap unswaddled unless she randomly falls asleep playing or something.  So, for bedtime we do the double escape proof swaddle.  She is always very content once she's all swaddled and she never breaks out of it.  Look up escape proof swaddle on youtube if you're interested.  For naps I've gotten her to sleep with one arm out but she still won't sleep with both arms free.  Oh, and my DD is almost 5 months.

  • Well you can scroll down and see all of my sleep deprived posts. Ty was not ready to give it up eaither but he keeps breaking free (even from the escape-proof double swaddle), and one time he woke up all tangled, so I thought we needed to give it up. However, he will NOT sleep at all without it. We were averaging 1-3 hours sleep and getting up anywhere from 6 to 11 times a night. Just yesterday, I started bottle, swaddle, bed and he is sleeping!! Went from 15-30 mni naps to 45min-1 1/2 hr naps! He is also sttn better. We got up 3 times last night. I am just going to be consistent with the bottle, swaddle, bed routine. He is no longer screaming or taking us over an hour to get him down. He i almost 5 months and I am just wrapping the swaddle extra tight. We use the miracle blanket to swaddle but I have heard good things about the magic sleep suit or getting a halo sleepsack and sewing the arms shut.

  • We've never swaddled because Audrey hated it from Day 1, but I've heard great things about the Magic Sleep Suit from other moms.  Apparently it's a great thing to transition babies out of their swaddles without going cold turkey.

  • We had the Lil' Houdini woombie and the convertible leggies woombie!  My LO seemed to do really well with both of them.  I liked that he could kick his legs around with the leggies one and then put his arms out one at a time...

My kid is the same way. I don't think it's fair to let them try to self-soothe if they can't get their hands in their mouths. I just started swaddling with one hand out and I give her a lovey. That seems to be working (though we're still not doing CIO...but she has put herself to sleep a few times and has woken up fewer...I think her real problem is the paci falling out)
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut

this! I've started swaddling DS with one arm out for now. Most nights he wakes himself up with the arm that's out, but I'm trying to just be really patient with it. We'll probably do one arm out for a few weeks just to make sure he's really comfortable with that before we break the other arm out.
