Question for FTM and 2+ moms as well:
Currently I will have the matress waterproof cover, then the crib length crib pad, then sheet on top. I was thinking of getting another smaller pad to put atop the crib sheet to avoid less laundry time. Is this worth it do you think? What are you ladies doing or have done in the past?
Also, for the smaller pad I wouldn't want to take the chance of baby getting wrapped up in it and only saw one set that had crib ties on it to prevent that but now cannot find them. Is that a totally irrational FTM fear?
TIA
Re: How are you protecting bedding?
The ultimate crib sheet has those ties, but IMO they are more trouble. I don't want to have to fumble with those little tie bastards at 3a.
I heard a great idea from another BTDT mom that I'm planning on employing once she transitions to the crib:
from top to bottom: sheet, pad, sheet, pad, matress
This way, if she blows out in the middle of the night, I'll just take off the top sheet and pad, and voila! Fresh sheet and pad just waiting for me!
Plus, a pad is hella cheaper than the "ultimate crib sheet", and I don't have to worry about her wrapping herself in the pad.
ETA: Note: I also tried to employ this in the bassinett, but the bassinett matress is too floppy to support two fitted sheets. But it does work perfectly in the crib.

Good question...I'm considering the same thing, so looking forward to the answers. We have some sheet savers, ultimate crib sheet, and waterproof pads. I've also heard to layer crib sheets. I really don't know what we're doing yet.
Also, for us, LO will be in a co-sleeper next to our bed for awhile, so we don't have nearly as many sheets for it. I'm thinking of using waterproof pads for it...I hadn't thought about baby getting wrapped up in them...hmm...I do know that the "sheet savers" have ties on them. We were given a few, I think from BRU.
This is what we did - except with 3 layers! (we got lots of crib sheets from our shower). It was my mom's idea and I love it! I did use the ultimate crib sheet instead of the mattress pad though - it's on the lowest layer and directly on top of the mattress, my mom did manage to get the little loops around the crib spindles even though we had 2 more layers on top of it.
After 2 years, Injects, PCOS diagnosis and 2 IUI's, we were blessed with our beautiful twin girls!

It isn't too soft. It is the same as the regular mattress. You just have to be careful about what kind of mattress pad you get. There are some ridiculously thick crib mattress pads out there.
We did the layering too, cheaper than a bunch of ultimate crib sheets (and easier too).
We'll miss you sweet Debbie Girl (4.21.12) and sweet Cindy Girl (8.9.12)

I'm with you on the "easier" aspect...but not on it being cheaper. Having the extra layers folded in my drawer is no more expensive than having the extra layers on your mattress from the start. It's still the same amount of dirty layers, doesn't matter where they started. Since it has been suggested it's too many layers, I would rather be safe than sorry.

Woah this is so weird! I was just talking on the phone to one of my BF's about this. She is lending me some pad or sheet that goes underneath the bed cover..or whatever it's called, the one with elastic on the ends that covers the mattress - I like to call it the sheet that I can never fold properly cause it's so damn awkward.
Annyyyways, it honestly had never crossed my mind that I needed it. Thankful that I know now though!
Okay, so probably dumb question, but does the ultimate crib sheet take the place of the mattress pad? My mom bought me an organic matress pad, but it's pretty soft and thick and I'm not sure that I want to use it. We also have an ultimate crib sheet, so I'm thinking ultimate crib sheet, waterproof pad, then sheet. Does that sound right?
Also, for co-sleeper, I'm thinking just waterproof pad then sheet...
I'm a nerd and youtube'd that shiz. Not even kidding. It changed my life, and now there are fitted crib sheets folded neatly in my drawers.
Honestly, when babies are new, they aren't likely to leak or have a 'blow-out'. DD never wet her mattress until she was almost 2....and then it was because she took off her diaper and peed right on it.
Before she could stand in her crib, I used a wool mattress pad (under her sheet) and treated it with lansinoh. Wool is totally waterproof if treated this way, it works for sheep. I'll be doing that for DD2.
That's my official hippie advice. I would avoid vinyl on mattresses, vinyl is highly toxic, especially when baby is so small and will spend so much time on their mattress. There are lots of alternatives.
I have sheet savers that have the ties on them, I got them at BBB if you're looking for them:
