4 month vaccination fail

X-Man had his 4 month check up yesterday and got another round of shots. At 2 months, he cried when he got his shots but then forgot about the pain in about 5 minutes. This time around, he kicked the nurse and wouldn't let her give him the second shot. She had to hold him down like the vet does when my beagle gets her bordatella nasal spray. X calmed down a few minutes later but then started screaming again when the skies opened up on us on the way to the car. He calmed down again and was fine for about 4 hours. Then DH kissed X's legs at the injection sites - to make him feel all better, even though he was fine and giggling all afternoon. Well, DH's scruff must have irritated the sites because they turned bright red and X started wailing like never before. He cried and screamed until we finally put him to bed almost a whole hour before his bedtime just to get some quiet.

Vent done.

Re: 4 month vaccination fail

  • There is something about the 4 hour time frame.  After my LO's last shots, he was fine all afternoon until exactly 4 hours later.  Then he screamed!!!  A horrible, high-pitched scream for about 2 hours.  They weren't red until the next morning.  It was on the leg where they did Prevnar.....  I am nervous about giving him that one again now. :(  (we are doing the delayed schedule so he only had one kind injected in both thighs.)

  • Now that you mention it, my LO started screaming  about 4 hours later as well.  I couldn't calm her down til she fell asleep.

  • Ty was VERY grumpy following his shots which was also round the time of his cold and the 4mo wakeful period. Not sure if they are related or not but after his shots we had 2 weeks of hell. He is much better now. I also noticed it getting really red and hard bumps under the injection sites that remained up to 3 days after.

  • We get our 4 month shots at the end of the month (alittle late b/c his 2 months were also a few weeks behind due to switching doctors)  and I'm dreading it!  It doesn't help that I'm reading Mother warriors right now.  I really hate shots.  ugh

  • My DD is amazing for her shots... she fusses a little when they're done and then is back to her happy self. Both times she has been great - no fussiness, very little pain at her injection site, no fever...

I still hate having them done though... I considered doing the delayed schedule but her pedi is a minimalist about it as-is, so I decided not to...

  • Aww poor little thing!

Audrey had her 4 month appt yesterday too.  She screamed bloody murder during the shots, then calmed down, then freaked out again.  Afterwards, she slept a lot for the rest of the day.  I took the day off work, and just held her and let her nurse when she wanted to, and literally she was on the boob all afternoon, either sleeping on it or eating.  It was like she was a newborn all over again!  It was kind of nice, actually.  :)

  • Yep, ladybug had a hard time with those too.  We schedule her appts for last thing in the afternoon though, so 4 hours later is bed time.  Poor babys!
